“Let me die,” American photojournalist Heidi Levine repeats to journalists Jasper Nathaniel as they try to outrun masked Israeli settlers who attacked her on Friday while she covered the olive harvest in the West Bank village of Abu Falah, near Ramallah. Around 80 settlers attacked Palestinian olive harvesters in the village, AP reported. The Palestinian Red Crescent said it treated six people injured in two attacks in Abu Falah. Levine, a freelancer for the Washington Post, told the Committee to Protect Journalists that the settlers knocked her down and kicked her for at least 10 minutes, even after she identified herself as an American journalist. They stole her camera, phone and bag. She was eventually taken to a hospital in Ramallah. "The IDF provided cover, with tear gas and machine guns, while the settlers beat" Levine "nearly to death," Nathaniel wrote, adding that soldiers then shot a Palestinian bystander and aimed their guns at and shoved paramedics trying to treat him. AP photos and circulating videos show Israeli soldiers standing over a wounded Palestinian man after they shot him. Andrey X, an activist also at the scene, said a Palestinian man "saved our lives from the settler-terrorists who attacked the olive harvesters and journalists” armed only with a slingshot.
To be clear, the only reason I was able to reach Heidi was because young Palestinians provided cover with rocks against machine-gun- and tear-gas-wielding settlers and soldiers. It’s those kids, not the settler terrorists, who the IDF was hunting after the attack.

This is not exactly my idea. This is better. The Iranians have designed their compellence plan as a deterrence plan: IF YOU KEEP UP CAT AND MOUSE, we're gonna hit your bases. But the underlying diagnosis is the same. They have lost the Battle of Hormuz. And therefore they must find another channel of cost-imposition. From what I can tell the escalation is designed correctly. Now they have escaped their strategic incoherence. This can work. The ball's in the US court. And I am not long enough.
Al Jazeera confirms. Finally, they have come around to my pov! This is the only way to persuade the US to capitulate on the Hormuz question.

A colleague asked me today if Israel ever came close to a military coup. Looks like we might heading into a variety of one just now.
🚨The sortie involved dozens of Israeli fighter jets and refueling aircraft, the sources said 🚨It followed a flight path consistent with a potential strike against Iran, passing through Syrian and Iraqi airspace 🚨As the aircraft approached the Iranian border, they turned around and returned to Israel, the sources said

This has got to be the most moronic story of the month. It's genuinely so stupid it frankly boggles the mind. It was broken by Norwegian daily "Dagens Næringsliv" (DN) under the title "Chinese-owned rental cars filmed secret exercise: Saved video of soldiers and codes" (dn.no/forsvar-og-sikkerhet/k…). BUT when you look into the story what actually happened is that, for an exercise, the Norwegian army was short on cars so it rented some from Hertz. Those rental cars had dashcams - as cars do - that the soldiers mistakenly kept on. At one point, some soldiers found out about that: they were clicking through the car menus out of boredom and stumbled on the footage, including clips of themselves typing gate codes in front of the camera. They deleted the footage. There is zero evidence the footage left the car. THAT'S IT, that's the whole story. China hysteria being what it is in Europe these days, this somehow got transformed into a "China spying" story because Hertz Norway is owned by Volvo, itself owned by Geely (a Chinese company), and 2 of the cars were from a Chinese brand, Deepal. The narrative apparently being that Geely, through Volvo, through Hertz, deliberately left standard dashcams on in rental cars in the hope that the Norwegian military would one day rent them and forget to turn the dashcams off 🤦 And now, as is always the case, it's being spread globally by accounts like Clash Report 👇, which even found a way to make the story dumber: their version has the cars as "Chinese-owned Volvos", when they weren’t Volvos at all. Such is the contemporary media ecosystem: one outlet invents the hysteria, the next one strips away the last remaining nuance and we all end up dumber for it.
Norwegian soldiers discovered that Chinese-owned Volvo rental cars recorded and stored videos during a major military exercise in Oslo from September 14–18. The footage captured soldiers entering and leaving vehicles, their movements, locations and even security codes used to access restricted areas. Despite the discovery, the military continued using the cars due to a lack of alternatives. Source: DN

An extremely relevant paper, given the renewed concern that wealth taxes lead to massive out-migration: The Norwegian wealth tax "exodus", discussed in global media, never happened. At most 100 individuals left. Tax revenue increased by +71.5%. No changes in business activity.
Norway's controversial 2021–2024 reforms nearly doubled the tax on business wealth. Firms of affected owners did not invest less, and outmigration was limited to the very top, from @Mariusring nber.org/papers/w35854

Some notes on my situation in Latvia: What I am observing at the moment is a threat of very severe extrajudicial punishment for speaking my mind and providing original opinions and analysis. The reason they opt for persona non grata status is the desire to deny me justice in the court system where the case - as senior politicians involved in attacking openly admit - won’t hold water. This is why I interpret the situation as an instance of political persecution. The threat is accompanied with a character assassination campaign involving far right infowar and fake news outfits which deliberately distort my views on the conflict. The goal of the attack is to destroy my life and to put a gag on me as a notable voice in public debate on the Russo-Ukranian war.
