ALT “It’s just been beyond sad to see,” said Atteeyah Hollie, deputy director of SCHR, which has advocated for improvements to Georgia’s indigent defense system for several decades. “What we are seeing right now is beyond the pale. And we can do better in our state. It’s a matter of whether we want to do better.” . . . . Hollie said Georgia’s public defender system was formed in part to address issues with piecemeal representation and it’s “frankly shocking” that state officials are dealing with the problem some 20 years later. She said the GPDC’s appellate division is supposed to serve as “a crucial check on illegal policing and prosecutorial practices.” “As long as we allow this system to continue the way it is, we’ll be condemning poor people and poor people only to the most unfair convictions and the longest prison sentences,” she said. “We have to have the same commitment to ensuring that people have good representation as we do to locking them up.

No. 26A428
KENNETH NELSEN, WARDEN v. CHRISTA GAIL PIKE
ON APPLICATION TO VACATE STAY
[September 30, 2026]
The application to vacate stay of execution of sentence of death presented to JUSTICE KAVANAUGH and by him referred to the Court is granted. The September 30, 2026 order of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Cir-cuit, case No. 26-5864, granting a stay of execution is vacated.
JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR, with whom JUSTICE KAGAN and
JUSTICE JACKSON join, dissenting.
The State of Tennessee is set to execute Christa Pike for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Earlier today, the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit issued a stay of Pike's execution solely to "adequately address and resolve" the issues presented in Pike's pending application for relief. Tennessee now asks this Court to vacate that stay and permit it to proceed with Pike's execution today. Stunningly, the Court acquiesces.](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/HTf_MFQWcAAJXwa.jpg?name=small&format=webp)

![A redacted official investigative document regarding Patrolman Dustin Bozzo. The document details that between March and May 2026, Bozzo conducted a total of 85 unauthorized searches of three privately owned vehicles using the department's FLOCK LPR (License Plate Recognition) system. Specific vehicle details and names are blacked out with redaction labels such as "[LPR Information]" and "[Crime]". The text states Bozzo used the system to monitor travel locations and vehicle movements "for personal reasons unrelated to his official duties" and "without a legitimate law enforcement purpose." The document concludes his actions were inconsistent with authorized purposes under O.C.G.A. § 35-1-22.](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/HP9pouoW0AAz8Km.jpg?name=small&format=webp)
