Being me, I say “yes. It is female. Is there a problem?” And he has the audacity to say “well our son is super complicated with a bad heart condition and I just didn’t expect a lady doctor”.
So I let him know that 11/12 residents here are female and if he wants to have his son wait for the sole male resident’s waitlist that’s cool but there’s no such thing as “lady doctors” and that people in this province would kill to have doc offer to take them on.
He THEN tried to get me to schedule him in with the male resident. I politely suggested he speak to the clerical staff. I am still in disbelief that this happened. #fuckthepatriarchy #WomenInMedicine
Week ago I saw a patient who’s dad mid-encounter asked me “who are you again?” To which I replied “Dr. Power”. His wife said something in French resembling asking me to be their sons fam doc. He proceeded to mumble “hmm. Dr. Power. It is female”
You know you’re a 1st Gen MD when you FaceTime your fam on call and they wish you a QUIET 24hr call shift #rotted #wedonttalkaboutbruno

As consultants, we see a side of the family physician shortage you should know:
There’s no substitute for family physicians;
Not other specialists
Not nurse practitioners

The NLMA says its access to information request reveals the N.L. Government has no plan to address the province’s doctor shortage. #nlpoli

It is disingenuous to publicly state that you can independently manage medical conditions for patients in lieu of physician care, and also state that this idea is about improving health care access and quality overall. 1/10

Dear various specialists: I do not know everything about your specialty.
It doesn’t mean I’m uneducated. I am a generalist. You’ll never hear about all the patients I managed fine without you. But I know my limits & when to ask for help.
That’s why I’m calling.
Be kind.
Things I love about rural FM Residency:
Patient booked an HOUR appointment in my resident clinic
CC: “nothing wrong. I need a new fam doc and someone recommended Dr. Power so figured I’d come have a chat” #blessed #ruralmed #medtwitter

An opinion piece written for the @globeandmail I also included racism experienced in residency, in what would have been paragraph 4: Racism even affected my medical education. During my first year of medical residency at Victoria General Hospital, /1

Colonialism and racism have caused unthinkable devastation in this country. Healing intergenerational trauma is the reality for many Indigenous Peoples and we all have a responsibility to work respectfully to address this legacy of pain and mistrust.

Shock. Grief. How many more will yet be found, unearthing a legacy of the darkest inhumanity? I don't know how I can or will "celebrate" Canada Day this year. Do we really know what #FirstNations means?

It's always inspiring to see the listening, learning, and reflection Canadians go through on #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay.
This #NIPD2021, ask you to keep a bit of that space for issues affecting Indigenous Peoples the other 364 days too. 🙏🏼❤️
We can change what we remember.
