Ten of the 24 people injured by bullets at the Kansas City Chiefs parade shooting were children.
As we followed the affected families, it quickly became clear that those kids are changed.

New research I worked on last year at @CAHPR_BrownSPH out this week in @Health_Affairs. We looked at why you keep getting letters in the mail saying your healthcare coverage is ending.
@jbuxbaum86 @Andy_Ryan_dydx and I used natural language processing to analyze 2 million news articles to find every time a hospital/insurer threatened to end a coverage contract. Turns out, they've started doing it a LOT, and it happens most with high-cost hospitals.
But they almost never follow through with their threats. Most times, it's just a negotiating tactic.
One of my goals as a journalist this year is to do a better job showing where my stories come from and how I report them.
It's the best way I can think of to build trust.
So let me pull back the curtain on my latest video for @KFFHealthNews and @NPR...
I was really grateful that so many people opened themselves up to talking with me.
Here's the full video. I hope you'll take the time to watch it with the same openness these folks gifted me.

Many thanks to everyone who chatted with me, to Kyle Pyatt for the beautiful camera work, and to @hnorms for her incredible talent as a video editor and producer.

Missouri Governor's FY27 budget anticipates a $713 million reduction in fed money for Medicaid expansion
Dr. Oz told health care executives at a fancy yacht club that they don't need to worry about the impending Medicaid cuts. Plus, he said the people who are about to lose Medicaid coverage are couch potatoes anyway. @TaraBannow reports from #JPM26: statnews.com/2026/01/13/jpm-…

If you feel like hospitals and insurers are fighting more often these days, you’re not alone! Here is what it could mean for your health care. @besables kffhealthnews.org/news/artic…
NEW: Trump's signature legislation is cutting $1 trillion from Medicaid. But even before those cuts hits, states are slashing their programs.
It's already making it harder for one North Carolina mom to find care for her disabled son.
"We are struggling to fight for our own survival."

NEW: Feel like you're reading more about hospitals fighting with insurers and even stranding patients out of network?
It's not your imagination. Almost 1 in 5 hospitals had a brawl with an insurer in the past 4 years.
Trump admin cuts mean we're likely to see even more...
NEW: Americans increasingly find themselves caught in disputes between hospitals and insurance companies.
@besables writes that the fights could become more common as hospitals brace for cuts from Trump policies. kffhealthnews.org/news/artic…
