Justine Dupont surfed above a mountain 100 miles offshore
At Cortes Bank, 100 miles west of San Diego, French big-wave surfer Justine Dupont tow-surfed this open-ocean reef in January 2023.
A long-period west swell climbed the submerged bank, then bent around a shallow rock “thumb” near its summit.
One peak can run like a point and the next split like an A-frame, so Dupont had to read the shape after releasing the tow rope.
