Kaelix Lass is now dead. In April she was "found to have severe bilateral pannus" (see post below). She was used for racing again twice in August, listed as retired earlier this month, now dead. How did she die?
Rest in Peace 🤍

In October at Warrnambool Victoria, the post-race vet exam found two and half year old "Kaelix Lass" had "moderate pannus in both eyes".
In November, she suffered "injuries to the left long head triceps muscle and right and left hind gracilis muscles".
Yesterday, after her race at Ballarat, the track vet reported she now has "severe bilateral pannus". Why was this not picked up before the race? How did she progress to SEVERE pannus without any track vets noticing before or after recent races?
At one stage during the race she is very close to the railing, unclear if she makes contact, and then she slows up as she continues. She may not have been able to properly see the railings, the lure, the other dogs. This is negligent and abusive, putting this dog's life at risk. She is number 3 white in footage.
GRV says about pannus: "Pannus is thought to be an auto-immune disease. This means the body actually starts to attack itself. The genetic predisposition to develop pannus is inherited – so it tends to affect certain breeds and certain families within these breeds more than others"
and
"The other factor thought to contribute to pannus is exposure to Ultra-Violet (UV) light. This exposure to UV light is thought to trigger the start of the reaction, or to make the reaction worse, so it is important to keep affected dogs out of bright light, especially in the summer months when the UV level is high. Even if exposure to UV light is not the cause of the disease, the rate of progression increases with exposure to high levels of UV light (from sun light, or reflected light from water)"
So why was Kaelix Lass being used for racing in daylight hours, exposed to UV light, when it was known she has pannus? Why was she allowed to run at all when her vision was impaired?
And this: "All corticosteroids (cortisones) are considered a ‘prohibited substance’ under the rules of racing (cortisones can also be used to mask pain), so the problem lies with keeping the dog’s eyes under control. For a greyhound to race, it has to be free of this drug at the time of racing. This means the greyhound has to stop medication at the right time prior to the race to make sure that the drug is completely out of its system on race day. The problem with this is that the dog is then at risk of a pannus flare-up or worsening of the condition – so it won’t be long before the greyhound will have to be retired from racing"

"If not diagnosed and treated correctly, this disease can lead to blindness. Diligent treatment of the disease will preserve vision in the vast majority of dogs"

Shame on @abcnews among others for not even mentioning that a dog broke its leg on track during their ‘celebrations’ How @ChrisMinnsMP can justify spending taxpayer dollars propping up this shite is beyond comprehension.
Of course they had to break a greyhound's leg on the last night at Wentworth Park. Among the known injuries last night was a fractured right hock for Rosa Marie (in footage below). While they were all boozing and celebrating, Rosa Marie was at a vet clinic in pain.
90 days of incapacitation ahead. Unlikely they will kill her - wouldn't look good to have a dead dog on the record for closing night.
Can't see any mention of her serious injuries or any other injuries from last night in media reports. The public just gets fed filtered rubbish

When they cut falls or injuries out of horse or greyhound racing footage they are misleading the public. The public has a right to see the truth.
"It does not help that the industry continues to erase footage of such catastrophic events from its archives ... But such censorship not only airbrushes history, it removes the public’s right to form a balanced view on who or what was to blame"

And, as always, the pro-racing arguments are just a series of deflective "whataboutisms". No defending of horse racing itself.
Just straw-clutching questions like "what about puppy farms?" or "what about shooting brumbies?"
It's all very telling...

"When racehorses are killed on the track, there is no moment of silence held in their honour. Instead, the killing is hidden behind a green screen, and racetrack personnel work as quickly as they can to clear the track, to keep the delay of the following race as brief as possible. Meanwhile, any evidence of the incident is being erased from the public video recording of the race" - @hrseracingkills

Statement of the Green Party of Ukraine
The Green Party of Ukraine (GPU) expresses its deep disappointment with recent statements by newly elected Australian Greens leader Senator David Shoebridge regarding the refusal to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
We sincerely thank the Australian Greens for supporting humanitarian missions and calling for a complete embargo on Russian oil. At the same time, we emphasise that refusing to provide defensive weapons to a country waging a just war of liberation is a dangerous illusion that plays into the hands of the aggressor, Vladimir Putin.
The Green Party of Ukraine emphasises:
Dogmatic pacifism kills. As part of the global environmental movement, we share a commitment to peace. However, pacifism in the face of a ruthless invader does not stop war — it leads to occupation and the destruction of an entire nation. Ukraine is exercising its legitimate right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
The absurdity of a “UN veto”. Senator Shoebridge’s demand that arms supplies be authorised through the UN Security Council, where Russia holds the power of veto, is detached from reality. It is equivalent to asking a criminal for permission to call the police.
Russia’s war is causing massive ecocide. Russian forces deliberately destroy dams, mine millions of hectares of Ukraine’s fertile black soil, burn unique nature reserves and poison Europe’s water resources. Environmental protection is impossible without protecting the people who live in that environment. The only way to stop this ecological catastrophe is to stop the Russian army by force.
Unity among the global Greens. Green parties across Europe have long recognised this threat. They are at the forefront of political forces demanding maximum military assistance for Ukraine. We call on our Australian colleagues to follow the example of their European Green counterparts.
The Green Party of Ukraine welcomes the position taken by Australian Senator Sarah Hanson-Young Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and those members of the Australian Greens who have publicly spoken out in defence of Ukraine.
We call on David Shoebridge to reconsider his position, listen to the voices of Ukrainian environmentalists and support the provision of defensive weapons to Ukraine. Only victory over the aggressor can restore lasting peace and security to the European continent.

Another dead dog on the track.
Tasmanian Labor supports this.
The party finds these regular on and off-track deaths and injuries to gentle, sentient animals completely acceptable.

Hobart Tasmania last night, Angry Mac fell after colliding with another greyhound. He suffered a right hind leg "injury" and was killed at the track.
Clearly unsafe. The only way to stop the deaths and injuries is to stop racing greyhounds. He was used for racing 58 times, prizemoney $16,750, dead.
Rest in Peace 🤍
