“these are not books to ignite a passion for reading”; and yet they have for many hundreds of people for many decades. no doubt curricula are in need of constant reform - not least to incorporate a breadth of themes, ideas and perspectives - but this approach is misdiagnostic.
‘The most widely studied literary text in the UK these days is JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls, closely followed by A Christmas Carol and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. These are not books to ignite a passion for reading. I would happily throw out the study of Dickens from schools, and likewise Priestley. Even our obsession with Shakespeare needs discussion. I am open to the idea of an entire Shakespeare text not being mandatory at GCSE but can you imagine the outcry?’ ‘All is not lost. I sit on a working party that is looking at how to reform the English GCSE. The government has begun a review of the curriculum and some ministers are listening.’ I hope there are some opposing views to provide a balanced perspective. thetimes.com/article/b3d98d5…

if you think that the problem of declining literacy and interest in literature is found in the content of books - static across time - and not the wider, shifting (material) culture within which literature is situated, you are not fit to be in charge of anyone’s education.

(CW: suicide) horrible tweet. the lion's share uptick in calls to LGBT suicide hotlines are very likely to be from young people now trapped in abusive living situations. the trump victory will both be sensitising for victims and emboldening for abusers.

most depressingly of all: the image of the histrionic (white) tenderqueer 'crying suicide' is one that emerges from the belly of the right wing. you are following their rulebook!

probably time some of you realise that existing on this website in such close proximity to unfettered fascism is, shockingly, being internalised by some of you and, at best, shifting you to a discursive terrain that entertains some of the most deplorable fascist discourses.
