Ok this might be the weirdest story I’ve ever reported on, involving: • A totally fabricated “exclusive” • A suspected pro-Netanyahu influence campaign • An author whose biography is entirely made up What on earth is going on at @JewishChron ? 972mag.com/jewish-chronicle-…

In ‘NAZA,’ the documentary in which two dozen Israeli military personnel admit to committing war crimes and genocide in Gaza, soldiers likened the ongoing slaughter of 73,000 Palestinians, more than a quarter of them children, to playing video games. “I wanted to leave ten minutes in,” a retired lawyer said after watching it at IFC Center. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever seen.” She hoped everyone would watch it. That sentiment has been a recurring theme in reviews. Over the next two months, ‘NAZA’ will continue its rollout to theaters across the U.S. In late November, ‘NAZA’ will begin streaming for free on ‘The Guardian’’s website, allowing it to reach an even bigger global audience. The film’s popularity has led to intense criticism from pro-Israel and pro-Palestine factions alike. On both sides are those who want the anonymous IDF personnel identified — so that they can be charged with either war crimes or, perhaps, treason. And on both sides are those attacking the Israeli filmmakers, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, for telling the story from their country’s vantage point. ‘NAZA’’s goal is to expose the inner workings of a genocidal system, says Ben Reiff, Abraham’s editor at +972 Magazine, which published many of the initial investigations built upon in the film. “The idea is that it can help build cases for accountability on a much bigger scale than would be true of trying individual soldiers in a handful of cases when actually thousands of soldiers and the highest levels of state have overseen and ordered this campaign of annihilation,” he says. Whether the film can be used to advance the case for genocide at the ICJ or assist in issuing arrest warrants for war crimes at the ICC, however, may be more complicated than convincing viewers. Israel Minister of Culture threatens to try and revoke citizenship from Yuval and Rachel, the directors of NAZA. This is the latest addition to Israeli politicians, from the government AND the opposition, lashing out at the film without even watching it xitter.cf/zoharm7/status/2099198…

As Yuval said in his award acceptance speech, part of what enables Israel’s genocide to continue is the denial of what Palestinian journalists have been killed for documenting since day one. Let us all hope this film contributes in some way to bringing it to an end.
‘NAZA’, a film about Israel’s genocide in Gaza won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. Co-director Yuval Abraham said Israeli officers described the mass killing of Palestinians as ‘not by accident, but by design’, and accused the US and Europe of enabling it.

It shouldn’t be necessary to hear Israeli confessions before the world stops funding & justifying the slaughter of Palestinians. NAZA’s warm reception is certainly reflective of the anti-Palestinian racism inherent in the media and the arts. But the killing is still ongoing.

NAZA reveals even more about these systems and the authorization Israel gave to kill civilians en masse. This information will be vital for any future accountability and justice.

Over the past three years, Yuval has published dozens of investigations based on anonymous sources, exposing much of what we know about the technology enabling Israel’s genocide in Gaza. 972mag.com/writer/yuval-abra…

On anonymity: The soldiers in NAZA are not only confessing to mass murder, they are revealing intelligence secrets relating to surveillance and AI targeting. If Israel knew their identities, it would retaliate severely, so there was no way they would agree to speak publicly.

By virtue of being Israeli, Yuval and Rachel also have access to the soldiers they interview in this film — and to Tel Aviv, where the whole film is shot, and which Basel and Hamdan are barred from entering.

It is a function of Israeli apartheid that while Basel and Hamdan can barely raise their heads, Yuval and Rachel have the time and freedom to work on projects bringing attention to Israel’s violence against Palestinians elsewhere.

On the co-directors of No Other Land: Basel & Hamdan are facing an existential struggle for the survival of their communities. Just a week before the premiere, Israel razed an entire village in the area, leaving 70 people homeless.
Four Israeli military bulldozers, backed by heavily armed forces, are destroying the Palestinian village of Al-Taban in Masafer Yatta right now. Homes and livelihoods are being demolished as we speak.

On the ovation: Yuval & Rachel were deeply uncomfortable and wanted to leave almost as soon as it began, but were encouraged to stay by people who recognized that the reception would generate more buzz — ultimately meaning more people will see this important film.

A week and a half before October 7, 2023 UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from Abu Dhabi and spoke with him for 45 minutes. In that conversation, bin Zayed warned that Hamas’ leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, was planning a major operation against Israel. Bin Zayed urged Netanyahu to take the situation seriously. To his surprise, however, the prime minister reacted with relative calm. Netanyahu said that, in his assessment, Hamas intended to operate in the West Bank area, and he reassured bin Zayed that Israel was prepared for any scenario. 🔗haaretz.com/israel-news/isra…
