Depression, which affects ~5% of the world's population, can hinder productivity. What are the economic implications of treating depression? Researchers @M_Angeluc & @bennett_econ, supported by J-PAL's #UrbanServicesInitiative, explored this in India 🇮🇳: j-p.al/034

Just submitted a review for a journal. Resisted the impulse to suggest to the editor they ask themselves "if this study was about the US would you accept it?" with the implicit answer yes they would. Probably would just annoy them. But do wish more editors asked themselves this.

This is precisely in line with what my WP says! In my paper, I showed (with an RCT) that female college graduates do not update their prior beliefs enough during the job search and end up in usual female-dominated sectors, missing great opportunities in other sectors.
Are jobseekers looking too narrowly for jobs? I discuss several studies that look at the idea that job-seekers only look for jobs that are exactly in what they trained in, causing them to miss out on other opportunities. blogs.worldbank.org/impactev…

I kind of love this: “You see, we can’t return the artifacts you (cough, the Ottomans, cough) gave us because we can only LEND.”

The role that mental depression plays in limiting a person's ability to adapt to a new challenge is an important issue with key implications for the distributional effects of shocks. Climate economists should think about the implications for our work.
Thanks @mattkahn1966! Thread about this paper to come soon.
Congratulations to @bennett_econ and @M_Angeluc for writing this important new health economics paper.

Really awesome video with @bassi_vittorio talking about his project on the rental market for capital improving productivity in Uganda, w/ @PorzioTommaso
After a COVID hiatus, the @CEGA_UC “r-squared” research retreat was back in full force today. Impressive papers were presented and great conversations were had. Fútbol was watched. Thanks to @tedmiguel, @carsonamelia7, and the CEGA team for bringing us together.

An extremely interesting JMP by Karim Fajury @USC_Econ karimfajury.com/home
Little causal evidence as to whether higher income reduces the propensity to engage in corruption.
Karim painstakingly gathers a novel dataset on vote buying and uses a RDD on cash transfer program.
