The Government has dressed up these water boards as community empowerment but it's clear already that this is just a cover for excusing the next decade of inaction on water. What bill payers really need now is a new Clean Water Authority with the muscle to end the sewage scandal, ban unjustified bonuses and hold water executives legally accountable.
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham says he will introduce 8 "regional water councils" to oversee water companies "For the first time, local people will have a real say over what they need from their water company, whether that's cleaning up polluted rivers or building new reservoirs"

Trump’s midterm setback is welcome. But Europe’s security cannot depend on who wins the next US election. We must build the capacity to defend ourselves, strengthen our industries and act together — with the UK playing its full part. europeanmovement.co.uk/trump…

EU is a political construct which can be flexible when requested to do so up to & including Treaty changes if necessary. Having UK back in EU would be a huge win win for both parties. Last night I dined with Portuguese MPs & UK's oldest ally would bend over backwards for Rejoin! – at Wolfsthal, Österreich
EXCLUSIVE: Brussels would be flexible on letting Britain stay out of the euro and the Schengen area if it applied to rejoin the EU, two EU officials have told POLITICO. vist.ly/5qy7i

European Movement UK is saddened by the passing of Patrick Stewart, a legendary actor and European advocate. Here’s a brilliant sketch he starred in from 2016 defending the European Convention on Human Rights.

Ah that #Brexit bonus
Mindblowing chart from OBR. In 2029 real household disposable income per person expected to be just 1% higher than in 2019. What an unbelievably awful decade. It used to grow by 2%+ every year, not 1% in 10 years.

• Right to live, work, study, retire in 30+ countries • Friction-free artist touring
• 40 million pieces of paperwork per annum ditched
• Mutual recognition of qualifications • Reliable multi-annual regional funding
• A say on the rules our exporters already follow
What is it that people imagine they would get out of rejoining the EU that they don't already have?

🚨 This is HUGE. The Times reports that Britain is already holding talks with the EU about a potential return to freedom of movement and other options for much closer alignment. The options that will eventually be put to the British public are being discussed with Brussels now, to establish what both sides could agree. “The conversation is happening.” The 2024 red lines of no Single Market, no customs union, no freedom of movement only apply to this Parliament. What comes next is now being worked through. Burnham meets EU leaders on 20 November. He says he wants Britain to rejoin the EU in his lifetime. And tonight we learn officials are already discussing the possible routes with Brussels. This is no longer a hypothetical debate about whether Britain might one day change course. 🎉 The process of deciding how far Britain moves back towards Europe has finally begun. 🇬🇧🇪🇺

The EU fee was about £12.6bn a year, whereas the estimated Brexit loss of output is now roughly £170bn–£230bn a year, with an associated loss of tax revenue of roughly £65bn–£85bn a year. That makes the fee equivalent to only about 5–7% of the estimated annual GDP loss. #BrexSHIT

theguardian.com/politics/202… “There had been reciprocal benefits of free movement for Britons, particularly for young members of the population wanting to experience living in Europe” At last, that simple fact is acknowledged! It’s a two-way street #Rejoin

Excellent, he can atleast read the room, for once!
By moving to the US, foreign born Johnson is effectively going back to where he came from. I’m sure the far right will be glad to hear that he is “going home”.

George Monbiot explains why the UK should rejoin the EU, "There's a reason why Russia tried to intervene in the Brexit vote, they knew that it would harm the UK and the EU if we left" "They were very clear about that and boy have they been proved right" "It has damaged our economic life, our social and cultural life" "Wales alone has lost £1 billion net in regional and social funding which it would have received from the EU" "And it has greatly weakened the opportunities particularly for young people, to work abroad, live abroad, to have the freedoms we had before" "We could rejoin the Customs Union, or the Single Market, but if we did that alone we would be rule takers, we have to accept whatever the EU handed down because we would not be at the table negotiating and making decisions alongside other nations" "As an audience member pointed out, yes the EU is changing. But that's not a reason not to rejoin, but that's a reason to be there in case it changes into a direction we don't like. We can help it be the kind of EU that we want it to be" "I don't think there's any option but to rejoin fully" My view: Brexit was sold as a way to take back control. In practice, it has often meant giving up influence over decisions that still affect us. Our businesses have to navigate rules shaped in Brussels, but Britain has no vote in setting them. That is not meaningful sovereignty; it is distance from the table. Rejoining would give the UK a voice in the institutions where shared rules are debated and agreed. It would also restore a closer, more predictable relationship with our largest nearby market, making it easier for businesses to trade, invest and plan. Those gains would not erase every problem facing the country, but they would remove barriers we chose to put in our own way. The case is about more than trade. It is about making it easier for people to study, work and build lives across Europe; cooperating on research, energy, climate and security; and giving communities and regions access to shared opportunities. These are practical freedoms and partnerships that matter in people’s everyday lives. A halfway arrangement could reduce some friction, but it would leave Britain following many common rules without full representation in shaping them. If the UK wants influence over the direction of European cooperation, membership is the route that provides it. Rejoining would not mean surrendering every national choice; it would mean choosing to make some decisions together, with a seat, a vote and the ability to argue for the outcome we want. The question is not whether the EU is perfect. It is whether Britain is better placed to shape its future from within, alongside its neighbours, or to stand outside while decisions with consequences for us are made without us. After the experience of Brexit, there is a strong case for choosing influence, cooperation and closer ties again. And since Britain left, no other EU member state has followed it out. Instead, the Union has grown to 27 members, while 10 aspiring members are currently in the accession process. That does not prove the EU is perfect or that membership suits every country. But it does show that countries see real value in joining: access to a huge shared market, stronger economic links and greater stability. European Commission They are not signing up because the EU has no problems; they are choosing to take part in a shared project that can bring investment, opportunity and a stronger voice in decisions affecting their future. If countries across Europe are working to join, Britain should ask why it chose to walk away, and whether standing outside has made us better placed to shape what comes next.

An important point: the #Brexit debate is now about lived experience, not about vacuous promises from the likes of David Davis, Rees-Mogg, Farage, Johnson et al.
🚨 The Brexit debate is becoming less ideology, more lived experience. People are looking at what changed in their own lives, what was lost, what got harder and asking why we should be permanently bound by a decision made ten years ago. “Would you welcome a conversation about going back in?” “100%.” Brexit Britain is Miss Havisham, except we weren’t jilted at the altar. We cancelled our own wedding and have spent ten years sitting beside the cake.

🚨 NEW DEVELOPMENT: France has dropped its opposition to Britain being included in the European Union's proposed Made in Europe industrial scheme, potentially opening the door to a major boost for British manufacturers. The proposed legislation is designed to protect European industries from cheaper imports, particularly Chinese electric vehicles. France and Germany now support allowing Britain to participate in parts of the scheme, provided the UK agrees to align with certain EU trade rules. That could help British carmakers remain integrated into European supply chains and compete for investment. However, it would also require political compromises, including possible alignment with European tariffs on Chinese vehicles. The proposal still needs wider EU approval, but the change in France's position is an encouraging development for British businesses concerned about being excluded from European industrial programmes.

🤩 The Brexit debate is moving very fast now. Bernd Lange, @berndlange chair of the European Parliament’s trade committee and a veteran of the Brexit negotiations, says Britain could move quickly into a *Switzerland plus* relationship with the EU. In other words, the choice is not simply: Hard Brexit forever or wait years for full re-entry. There are routes back towards deep economic integration much faster than that. And once again, the message from Europe is not stay away. It is: if Britain wants to come closer, the door is open.
