Hello friends! Mike Belliveau here, formerly @preventharm. I've launched a new project to transform the petrochemical industry & plastics so that they no longer harm people & the planet, with justice for all. Sign up with Bend the Curve at bendthecurve.org for news & more
EPS plastic foam (styrofoam) used in appliance packaging is:
❌ Not recycled at scale
❌ Not compostable
❌ Made from crude oil & fossil gas
❌ Production emits dangerous carcinogens into the air
You CAN take action to get styrofoam outside the box: lookoutsidethebox.com
The foam packaging inside your KitchenAid mixer isn't just landfill - it is made with benzene, a known human carcinogen.
We've just launched a campaign to expose plastic foam's toxic lifecycle and name the companies behind still pushing its use.

Are you a NY resident? Call your Assemblymember TODAY! The Packaging Reduction Act (A1646a) bans PFAS in packaging + makes corporations pay for plastic waste but industry is fighting it. Your call can outweigh them. ☎️ 518-455-4100
Want less plastic and toxic chemicals in your life? Here's what to do: call Speaker Carl Heastie (518-455-3791) to ask that he schedule a vote on The Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act (A1749-a) ASAP! @NYSA_Majority

The California State Teachers' Retirement System is reducing its exposure to fossil fuels, in line with growing evidence of the financial risk facing the most carbon-intensive investments. Learn more from our North America newsletter, out May 5.

We’ve been saying this! Oversupply of plastics and an oversupply of its harms, we need to bend the curve down on plastic production and consumption.
Our research has found that the plastics (petrochemicals) market is over-supplied and in decline while the impact on air, water, land quality, public health and the planet's ecosystems is almost incalculable and may require generations to mitigate.

A 600-person town on the Texas coast is becoming a fossil fuel fenceline. Residents report toxic smells, dead wildlife, and health concerns as crude oil terminals expand around Ingleside on the Bay. floodlightnews.org/how-big-o…
Over 50% of all benzene from oil refineries exists to make one product: polystyrene.
That's the foam cup. The clamshell container. The packing peanuts.
Benzene causes leukemia. Polystyrene is almost never recycled.
Most of these uses are completely replaceable.
This #EarthDay, join us in bending that curve toward health, justice + a livable planet.

But peak plastics is within reach. Renewable materials + sustainable solutions already exist. Corporate demand for plastics is the weak link BUT market leaders have the power to change this.

Happy Earth Day!

Billions of dollars are at stake in Louisiana’s oil pollution lawsuits. But some of the judges on those cases had financial ties to Exxon, Chevron and other defendants. floodlightnews.org/judges-ov…

🥤 If your plastic isn’t getting recycled, where does it go? It often ends up traveling thousands of miles, getting shipped to other countries, or landfilled, or burned. 📢 Aeshnina (Nina) Azzahra Aqilani is a youth activist who has spent years asking adults a simple question: Can you stop sending your plastic waste to my backyard?
🔎 It’s something most people don’t realize: There is a massive waste industry made up of businesses, governments, and individuals vying for a share of the nearly $1,300 billion that is generated annually in the global waste market.
🚢 And a large part of it includes the Global North sending its plastic pollution to the Global South, including Nina’s homeland of Indonesia.
❌ Plastic pollution doesn’t go “away,” it just moves. Would you put your trash in your neighbor’s backyard?
✅ Governments and businesses must stop this practice now, hold polluters accountable, and reduce plastic production today.

Ammonia is bad for investors and worse for communities. A recent @ieefa_institute report found that the proposed surge in ammonia production creates few jobs, carries rising financial risk, and relies on speculative export markets. Meanwhile, the health toll is real...
According to one of our recent reports, hopes that the accelerated expansion of U.S. ammonia capacity will be met in a substantial way by new domestic markets in energy are likely to be disappointed.

“Our community is already surrounded by pollution. It makes absolutely no sense to approve new LNG facilities here in southwest Louisiana... It’s just like a death sentence.” — environmental advocate Roishetta Ozane.

Ammonia is a hazardous chemical used in the plastics production chain. The U.S. wants to increase production capacity…that’s a bad bet: instagram.com/p/DWrDoZkEf9U/…
Industry says we need more ammonia plants.
Our fact sheet says:
❌ Half of ammonia fertilizer is wasted — fix that first
❌ "Clean ammonia" fuel claims don't hold up to scrutiny
❌ Fenceline communities are already at their limit
