Thanks to Terry Tao for publishing on his blog an essay I wrote about "golden vs dark ages" scenarios for mathematics and, more broadly, for science!

The A.I.-induced crisis in math is depressing because devalues one the most rarified areas of human thought. The great @terrence_tao suggests that mathematicians may find creative new ways to use A.I. that advances their field. "They will increasingly work in large groups collaborating on once-unimagined projects." I hope he's right, but the obvious question is: will A.I. companies simply then train their algorithms to do the same thing?

The attached blog post lays the groundwork for a major project in mathematics. I think the repercussions of this enterprise will be vast and significant. If we manage to bring all existing mathematics into a single unified library, it will open up the possibility of making mathematical exploration much more efficient. It should also have a deep impact on mathematical education. A robust library will make it possible to fully embrace the prospect of having an autonomous agent that can guide a human along whatever path is requested. (1/n)

🚨NEW INVESTIGATION: zero-click mercenary spyware hacking via targeted ads.
A normal-looking ad loads. If you're a target, you're infected. No click needed.
To protect yourself, block ads now.
First time it's been confirmed in the wild. We call it #AdFection.
Candiru spyware infections at @AJEnglish. 45+ devices infected.
Same ad pipeline operated by Israeli company Discover-Tech reached NATO, European Parliament, dozens of gov networks & critical infrastructure incl US nuclear giant Westinghouse.
Confiant, which worked with us, found signs ads were displayed at US @DeptofWar, IAEA & ICC.

Pardon my French but what a fucking time to be a mathematician!!! So awesome.
By the way, yeah, LLMs are playing a huge role here in helping people (within academic math and outside of academic math) to make huge progress in understanding the structure of elliptic curve families, and helping with the coding, and it is totally awesome when they are used in this way. There are results, there is understanding, and there are more people than ever in this area making discoveries. It rocks.
🚨 RANK 32 🚨
Zev Klagsbrun just posted an elliptic curve of rank >= 32

Wouter van Doorn and I have written a short paper explaining the 'Egyptian fraction' paper included in the recent OpenAI proofs.
Not the most important of the recent proofs, but this is a favourite topic of ours (and of Erdős).

We want to support the mathematics community in turning progress in AI into deeper human understanding and new discoveries. To support that goal, we are contributing $5 million to a new Simons Foundation initiative to help mathematicians examine, understand, and build on results produced by AI, including the results we recently published.
The funding, managed and awarded by the @SimonsFdn will support workshops, conferences, and special programs. We will also provide access to our models and computing resources to Simons Foundation-supported researchers.
How can the math community forge the best path forward in the AI age? We're committing $15M to workshops and initiatives — plus free AI computing resources for foundation-supported researchers — through new partnerships with @AnthropicAI and @OpenAI: bit.ly/4zpfIbW

Borrowing an idea from one research discipline to solve a thorny problem in another is an age-old scientific trick. Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, for example, famously inspired algorithms in computer science that “evolve” solutions to complex problems.
But such clever leaps are fleetingly rare. For #AI, however, hopping between fields can be a breeze.
Researchers highlighted that ability with the release of 36 preprints produced with a single suite of AI tools called BootLoops. The so-called harness can be used with any large language model, such as Anthropic’s Claude or OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
And in just 3 months, researchers used Claude outfitted with BootLoops to cross-pollinate at a massive scale, spotting—and precisely solving—problems in seemingly unrelated fields that share the same mathematical structures.
The resulting papers range widely, from figuring out the age of sunspots, to analyzing government health policies, to attempting to decipher a mysterious medieval manuscript.

It was my absolute pleasure to interview Bartosz Naskrecki @nasqret and I'm now very excited to share the interview with you.
He's possibly the most knowledgeable person I know about the current capabilities of AI in math and I just learned *a lot* in this conversation (and during an amazing talk he gave at the conference we were both at). Thanks Bartosz!
Plus, look at that location!! 🤩

I spoke with The Daily about what’s happening to math in the age of AI—and what it feels like to be a mathematician right now.
The conversation went places I hadn’t expected.

The OpenAI proofs include proofs for 23 Erdős problems - all of them, in my view, interesting and significant.
With the associated papers running at 1268 pages total (and badly written), reading/understanding these proofs will take time!

Some people are confused why mathematicians say OAI's drop was the "death" of a field, or figure that it's death insomuch as a bunch of university professors lost their overpaid hobby of proving theorems. That's a misunderstanding: the damage's real.
