If YIMBYs could drop the disdain for how ordinary people want to live, I think they would gain more leverage. Unfortunately, much of YIMBY-ism and Urbanism seems to be a social engineering and re-education project bent on re-training the public to live by their aesthetic.

You have no choice but to save the United States. There is literally nowhere left to go. This is it. The last bastion. The Alamo. Last stop Saloon. If the US completely falls, it's checkmate Earth. There's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, you can't opt out. There is no Shire.

Sounds impressive. But it’s rainwater. It falls on plants and grass, and it would have fallen anyway. It’s not that 11,000 litres of water magically dissolve into oblivion.

Joe Rogan laughed at Elon Musk in 2018 when he was explaining the Tesla Roadster.
Elon’s response? “How fast do you want it to go?”

Surround yourself with people who see a flying car and say, "Awesome!"
Not people who see a flying car and say, "It's not actually flying" or "I don't see the point."
This post is not about cars :)

Everyone's focused on the Roadster flying and driving upside down. That's not the point.
The demo shows what the tech can do. The suction fan keeps the car glued to the track. The thrusters could straighten out a car that's spinning out of control, or steady one that's gone airborne in a crash and set it back down.
Right now brakes are the only thing a car has to save itself in a catastrophe. This could be the next big leap in collision prevention.
Reading is the master cheat code.
If your child becomes a reader, 80% of the education job is already done.
Over the decades, I’ve seen thousands of kids. When a kid or a parent tells me they read for hours every day and read lots of books, my immediate thought is: “No problem here.” Biology, history, business, legal documents, even a math textbook – everywhere you need to read. If you read very slowly or with great difficulty, you’re behind.
But reading also develops something else: quiet cognitive focus. Even a kid reading fantasy novels for hours is learning to sit down and focus.
If a kid isn’t reading, they limp through all the academic content. If they are a reader, those basic reading abilities and that cognitive focus can transfer across domains.
That’s why I worry less about the kind of education a child is getting than whether they are becoming a reader.

Reminds me of that joke about how a physicist dies and goes to Heaven, upon which he asks God why He made the speed of light as arbitrary as 186,282 miles per second.
“What do you mean?” God replies. “The speed of light is 1.”
