🦇 Is the barbastelle bat's hunting on moths with low-intensity echolocation the classic example for predator-prey coevolution it was thought to be? No, a new study says, showing that its hunting strategy likely evolved from a quiet gleaning ancestor and is not a direct adaption to its preys’ hearing ability: sciencedirect.com/science/ar… @batsmoths @AcFuncEcolGroup @D_Lewanzik 📸 Sherrie and Brock Fenton

Weather, echolocation and bats: our podcast by @ASS_JASA is out where we discuss our new paper led by Léna de Framond ☀️☔️🦇🎼👂
ACROSS ACOUSTICS Have you listened to our latest episode yet? Researchers know that bats will alter the calls they use for echolocation depending on their task or environment. Will they change their calls based on the weather? doi.org/10.1121/10.0019359 @AcFuncEcolGroup

“Bad” weather for bats? 🦇☔ Temperature and humidity affect ultrasound. Scientists from our institute examined the effects of weather on the echolocation calls of three bat species and found that even though some slightly adapt their calls to “bad” weather, they don’t compensate the decrease in detection range. Read the whole study here: doi.org/10.1121/10.0019359 @AcFuncEcolGroup @batsmoths

Happy to share this work on the hunting behavior of greater mouse-eared bats 🦇🌕 Turns out, they like a big, chunky beetle even though they are much harder to catch than smaller moths @AHubancheva @YovelBatLab @batsmoths doi.org/10.7554/eLife.84190 @eLife

You know all those taxidermied bats on @Etsy that are listed as “ethically sourced”? Yeah, that’s bullshit. Here are two red flags, using “World of Wonders Deco” as an example.

Dear funders, publishers, research instit. & researchers We waste 82-89% of conducted ecological research Ignorance of the problem is expensive, yet we seem to be successfully ignorant for decades More in our paper @NatureEcoEvo, preprint & this 🧵 links in later tweets 1/x
