Here's what I think about AI. It's improving fast. Faster than any of us can understand. It will change things. More so and in ways we can't anticipate. The coming transformations will likely be chaotic. We want to keep our shit together. And society cohesive. The games of power, wealth, status won't be enough. We need something else that binds us. That's hard because most things divide us. When we're divided, we hurt each other. There is one thing we agree upon. No one wants to die right now. That's pretty cool. Even if you believe in an afterlife. You still don't want to die right now. No matter your religion, nationality or ethnicity. No body wants to die right now. This is a good place to start. It's possible that things will change so much. And so fast. That we will conclude. The ideas of the world no longer make sense. We need new ideas about ourselves and each other. We can now think bigger than ever before. Not just about wealth, status and power. But about discovery, knowledge and exploration. About fulfillment, love and experience. As we dream. Certain things may no longer make sense. For example, harming your body or mind. Or hurting another human. Or polluting earth which is really polluting ourselves. History shows us that new ideas come about. They change how people understand life. And reality. Sometimes new ideas are radical. Making the previous era look unrecognizable. Like democracy, germ theory, relativity or computers. Change is coming. Now is a good time to prepare ourselves for change. And to warm ourselves up. That new ideas may be coming. And while that may feel scary and foreign. We can have courage that we will be ok. That we are resilient and strong. That we may be entering. Into the most magnificent era to ever emerge. In this part of the galaxy.

Just to be clear, I am pointing out this reality as a fact, not as something to be either cheered or dreaded. However, the transition will be pretty challenging for almost everyone, myself included. I am frustrated that although much attention has been given to the prospects (or lack thereof) of some kind of AI doom, the more imminent impact of AI tools on all aspects of knowledge work is far less publicized. This is where we could really use some kind of *credible* human leadership, especially at organizations and institutions that are at the forefront of this trend. Unfortunately, apart from few general boilerplate statements, we are not getting much in terms of actionable advice and strategy.
We are rapidly approaching the point where most skills will be commoditized. We are completely unprepared for this reality.

We must create the generative jobs of the future to make up for the simultaneous disruption that will hit our graduates in the coming couple of years. This is the real thing governments should be focused on, create accelerators, open innovation & more to survive & thrive.
🚨 India's private engineering institutes are reporting a 50-70% drop in placements this year.

the greatest story in history is unfolding more or less quietly while everyone's eyes are glazed over. it hardly matters how obnoxious the average san francisco booster is, even they underestimate the importance of this place

Based on how Earth always does everything exactly the wrong way, I'm guessing the plan is to run inflation hot until the Federal Reserve takes drastic action to clamp down at exactly the point where AI disemployment starts to seriously hit large numbers of people.

Staying offline as of late but at the request of AI safety friends I'd like to draw attention to this. Everyone I know building AI/ AGI thinks it has a probability of ending civilization for one reason or another. Personally I'd agree with most ppl that an ai outright "killing us" a la terminator isn't super likely, but I do worry about second order effects if we aren't careful. (Mass mental problems, massive amounts of power conferred to a small minority - more-so than is already the case etc etc) The questions I personally would ask right now: - how do people find meaning in a world where so much is outsourced? What should a young person do right now as they figure out their career? Address hopelessness in the face of god-like tech. - assuming we don't have some amazing god-like benevolent agi in the near future, how do we improve quality control so we aren't even more inundated with code bloat etc? How do we incentivize the expertise needed in young engineers so they know how to avoid ai assisted code bloat? (For example) --> apply this reasoning to all kinds of sectors - how can we work harder to prevent everyone from burnout of their dopamine receptors? Even if we're all happily working *with* agi - how do we protect our brains? Cuz we're failing now. - in that vein: how can we start building low tech zones now? a lot of people would benefit from this economically but also psychologically. A lot of ppl clearly aren't able to adapt to perpetually online life. Will write more thoughtfully and with more ideas when I have a bit more time - I had promised to do this today so plz excuse any holes in my thinking etc. 🤍

I found some weird unconfirmed speculations about powerful internal models on Reddit. - Please take all with a grain of salt. - Apparently, Two different users claim they got access to OpenAI's internal models and are sharing information on reddit. FeltSteam reddit.com/user/FeltSteam/ Describe in detail 2 different models that already finished training on 2022 with the code-names: "Gobi" and "Arrakis". K3wp reddit.com/user/K3wp/ Claimed for a long time to had access to an internal powerful model through the ChatGPT API. According to FeltSteam: - OpenAI are in possession of a powerful model code-named "arrakis". - It is everything to everything (all modalities to all modalities). [see codi-gen.github.io] - Arrakis exceeds GPT-4 capabilities and performs very close to human experts on many different fields. - Hallucination rates are much lower than GPT-4. - Half of it's training data was synthetic. - Inference cost is around the same as GPT-4 because of the conditional MoE/Multimodal weights offloading. - It is also a very very good autonomous agent. - It's release date is scheduled to 2024. More coincidences: - Mr @apples_jimmy's "AGI has been achieved internally". - Sama's comment about slow or fast takeoff and about 10000x developers. Source: The post of @Simeon_Cps grabbed my attention so I started digging into this: nitter.cf/Simeon_Cps/statu… I find all of this a bit hard to believe. Anyone got more info on this subject?
Wait, can we consider seriously the hypothesis that 1) the recent hyped tweets from OA's staff 2) "AGI has been achieved internally" 3) sama's comments on the qualification of slow or fast takeoff hinging on the date you count from 4) sama's comments on 10000x researchers are actually mapping to something true? The implications are so crazy in terms of power shift. Or level of risks over the next few months. Could some forecasters try to get a better estimate or share their own forecast on it? @eli_lifland @NathanpmYoung @peterwildeford @lxrjl

I don’t think people understand just how quickly many jobs will be replaced by AI. Ex: Midjourney and DALL-E 3 are now good enough that I find it hard to believe I’ll need to hire a graphic designer. Knowledge work is going to have a reckoning.
