Some magical progress towards "magic state" in quantum! Our @GoogleQuantumAI team has demonstrated "magic state cultivation" on physical hardware for the first time. The result is a 40x error reduction on our Willow processor vs. previous methods, achieving a state-of-the-art 99.99% logical fidelity. It's another step towards useful, error-corrected quantum computers to help solve the hardest problems. The result is published in Science today, watch the video below to see how it works

The first ingredient of any firework is the ancient explosive black powder, made by 75% potassium nitrate, 15% charcoal and 10% sulfur. Once lit with a fuse or spark, the sulfur melts first at 112.8°C. The sulfur flows over the potassium nitrate and charcoal, which then burn. This combustion reaction quickly produces a large amount of energy and gas – in other words, an explosion. There are a number of different elements that, when added to a firework and heated, release different wavelengths of light that appear as different colors. Strontium makes red. Barium produces green. Copper burns blue, and so on.

A 4,000-year-old Babylonian clay tablet records a teenager complaining about uncool clothing. Around 1800 BC, an Old Babylonian student named Iddin-Sin penned a cuneiform letter to his mother, Zinu, that reads remarkably like a modern, overly dramatic text message. Writing from the ancient Mesopotamian city of Larsa, the young man was outraged by the quality of the homemade garments she sent him. Rather than opening with warm pleasantries or asking about her well-being, Iddin-Sin immediately complained that the other young gentlemen's clothing was improving every year, while his mother insisted on making his 'poorer and more scanty' despite the household having plenty of wool. His indignation perfectly captures the timeless teenage horror of not fitting in with peers. To twist the knife, the ancient teenager compared his wardrobe to that of his father’s assistant’s son, who proudly boasted two brand-new outfits. Iddin-Sin then delivered the ultimate ancient guilt trip, writing: 'In spite of the fact that you bore me and his mother only adopted him, his mother loves him, while you, you do not love me!' Preserved for millennia on clay, this dramatic message serves as a comforting reminder that schoolyard peer pressure, status anxiety, and dramatic parent-child dynamics are not modern inventions of the social media age, but have been deeply hardwired into human nature for thousands of years. source: Oppenheim, A. L. (1967). Letters from Mesopotamia: Official, Business, and Private Letters on Clay Tablets from Two Millennia. University of Chicago Press.

Mindblowing fact. Mitochondria, the tiny powerhouses that fuel every cell in your body, have their own DNA, separate from yours. They originated as independent bacteria that were engulfed ~2 billion years ago and became our ultimate endosymbiotic allies. [🎞️ xynorko]

🇺🇸🇫🇮 Figure AI retired its F.02 humanoid robots by training them to jump into molten steel, and the idea came from Arnold Schwarzenegger himself. The send-off happened at a foundry in Imatra, Finland, after foundries in the U.S. and Mexico refused to take machines with lithium-ion batteries. Figure says the robots had to be destroyed to protect its IP, and it's turning the recovered metal into commemorative keepsakes. No word yet on whether any of them said "I'll be back." Back in 2003, a German film crew filming in the Gobi Desert captured an incredibly moving moment: after a tough two-day birth, a mother camel rejected her newborn. A nomadic family then performed the ancient Hoos singing ritual passed down for generations. Once the song ended, the camel shed tears and finally accepted her baby. This powerful scene became one of the most memorable parts of the Oscar-nominated documentary The Story of the Weeping Camel.

Listen to the haunting silence of an ecosystem gradually dying out over half a century. This acoustic profile captures the progressive erasure of birdsong, serving as a stark and alarming warning of catastrophic biodiversity loss. Listen closely to realize exactly what we have lost.
