Technology is destroying our race, but it's not AI, it's the phones
Major new report on global trends in mental health, out today from Sapien Labs. Data from 2.5 million people across 85 countries. Some of the most important findings: 1) Young adults used to generally have good mental health, compared to older generations. But now, in ALL countries examined, they are doing badly compared to older generations in that country. 2) "Four key factors have emerged that together predict three quarters of this effect. These are diminished family bonds, diminished spirituality, smartphones at increasingly young age, and increasing consumption of ultra-processed food." 3) The decline of young people's mental health is "most pronounced in the wealthier and more developed countries." They note that it is in such countries that smartphones are given earliest, junk food is most heavily consumed, spirituality is most diminished, and family ties are looser and often weaker. 4) "A younger age of first smartphone ownership is associated with increased suicidal thoughts, aggression, and other problems in adulthood." 5) Here is their summary of findings on early smartphone ownership: "GenZ is the first generation to grow up with a smartphone. Among this group, the younger they acquired their first smartphone in childhood, the more likely they are to have struggles as adults. These struggles extend beyond sadness and anxiety to less discussed symptoms, such as a sense of being detached from reality, suicidal thoughts, and aggression towards others. The effects arise through disruption of sleep, increased risk of exposure to harmful online content, predators, and explicit material as well as increased probabilities of cyberbullying during crucial developmental years. Excessive time spent on smartphones also diminishes the development of social cognition that requires learned interpretation of facial expressions, body language, and group dynamics. The negative impacts are particularly sharp below age 13." The report is short, accessible, and important. Read it here: sapienlabs.org/global-mind-h…

Ask yourself—what’s going to stop the government from deporting you to a prison in El Salvador? How would you prove it’s an error if you don’t have due process? If it can happen to anyone, it can happen to you. The people get it. Either everyone has due process—or nobody does.

"Fauci, Birx, Redfield presided over the worst fiasco in public health history -destroyed younger gen, creating massive psychol harms in teens & college students, suicidal ideation, self-harms, anxiety/depression - from the lockdown, not the virus. They caused that." #History

Simone Biles taught a valuable lesson at the Olympics: Overcoming adversity takes time. Resilience is not about how quickly you bounce back—it’s about how fully you recover. You can’t judge people’s strength when they fall. Their fortitude is visible when they rise again.

George Monbiot symbolizes what I will never understand about my fellow leftist intellectuals and COVID: why so many people on the left have adamantly refused to consider the economic and human devastation caused by the lockdown and still rigidly focus only on the deaths caused by COVID itself. Of course I understand the temptation to use COVID as the demonstrable proof that the conservative right and alt-right, from Johnson to Trump and Bolsonaro, was despicable - and these three and others were, no question. They appeared both unconcerned with the welfare of the wider public and irresponsible. It was fun and rewarding to bang on them. It was exhilarating to be morally right. Notwithstanding that this is a very short-sighted view, this is where the absurdity begins. Anders Tegnell is anything but an alt-right dogmatist. What he rightfully claimed from the start is that closing down society comes at a steep price and the consequences will be felt for a long time, which is why he would rather avoid it. Why many on the left, transported by their self-righteous momentum, chose to seize on him as the embodiment of evil and the target of their sarcasm, is not only misplaced but incomprehensible. Why people who claim to care for the public remain purposefully blind to the economic and social devastation visited upon the poor both in our Western societies and in developing countries by the lockdown is unfathomable to me. Why they have applauded the sudden exacerbation of economic inequality caused by the lockdown, which goes against every value ever carried by the left, is beyond me. Surely by now the temptation to gloat should have given way to horror at the assault on society by inflation, new poverty, domestic violence, loss in education, retarded children's development, degraded mental health, reverse of women's equality, reverse of development in the world, etc, etc, etc? In the comments to his post, @freddiesayers pointed out to George Monbiot that a more relevant statistics, surely, is overall excess mortality during COVID, which places Sweden practically as the lowest in the world. But no: Monbiot, and a number of left-wing intellectuals with him, refuses to this day to give up on the joy of moral virtue. It is morbidly fascinating to see him and others refuse, four years later, to take notice of the poverty caused by the lockdown which stares them in the face. Strange fate for the left... if we consider that they represent the left, which I don't anymore. They rather represent their own self-satisfaction.
A really interesting article about the bizarre fetishisation by both left and right of Sweden's pandemic response, even though it performed worse in terms of Covid deaths than Finland, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Ireland and many other European countries. jacobin.com/2023/11/swedish-…
