⚠️ SCAM ALERT – FAKE BANK & POLICE CALLS ⚠️ Waterloo Regional Police are warning the public about a sophisticated scam involving fake calls and emails from individuals posing as bank representatives and police officers. On October 18, a Waterloo resident was contacted by scammers claiming to be from Scotiabank and the Toronto Police Service. The suspects used spoofed phone numbers, official-looking emails, and pressured the victim to surrender bank cards via a “courier” under threat of legal consequences. Thankfully, the victim contacted their financial institution and police before any financial loss occurred. Remember: 🚨Verify before you act. If someone claims to be from your bank or a police service, hang up and call the official number listed on your card or the organization’s website. Never rely on caller ID alone - it can be spoofed. 🚨Never share personal information via links or texts. Banks and police will never ask you to click on a link to verify your identity or provide passwords, card numbers, or PINs via email or text. 🚨Look closely at email addresses. Official agencies do not use free email services like Gmail or Hotmail. 🚨Trust Your Instincts.
