At the 2025 Shopify conference, everyone I met was really positive about how their app was doing. At the same event this year, several people admitted to me that they're no longer growing.
I wanted to know if this is backed by data so I did the research and discovered that things have got harder. The problem is the number of apps is growing more than the amount of new stores, so app companies aren't benefitting from Shopify's success.

On most sites, yes. Document Library Pro 4.2 now moves those files out of the uploads folder, so only people with access can download them.

It's hard to work out which is the leading ecommerce platform because WooCommerce has so many "phantom" sites, which run it but don't actually have an online shop. BuiltWith estimates this at 46% 👻🤯. It's unfair of them to assume that all Shopify stores are active, though - yet again, making it impossible to compare.

I get fed up with constantly hearing opposite views on whether WooCommerce or Shopify is the market leader, so I decided to do figure it out for myself.
Turns out that Shopify leads WooCommerce 4.7 to 1 across the biggest 100,000 sites, but WooCommerce leads 1.26 to 1 across the whole web - so they both win in different ways.
