Another NYE, another night of terror for millions of birds across the Netherlands. Last year we published (esajournals.onlinelibrary.wi…) about the massive impact of fireworks on birds. Thread with a damning animation of radar measurements during NYE countdown, below. 👇
The year is almost over, and NYE fireworks are just around the corner. So it's time to talk birds and fireworks! Thread 🧵👇
We have now published new work in @ESAFrontiers looking at the effects of fireworks on birds, using weather radar and bird counts: doi.org/10.1002/fee.2694

Intense #nocmig picked up on radar from the Southern Norwegian coast at Lista Bird Observatory last night. A Westerly movement out into the North Sea with birds taking advantage of the slack winds under a flabby low pressure system. Yellow are small birds & Orange medium sized.

📣The suspend hunting from 2021 has allowed a population recovery in Turtle Dove!
A paper published in Conservation Letters today shows the population response in terms of breeding numbers after the first two seasons of the moratorium.

A first for an Irish Robin!
A great record of a Robin ringed in Calais in France in mid Sept and found in West Cork two weeks later. This is the first record of a Robin moving between France and Ireland!
Thanks to Shona in Cork for contacting us when she found the ring!

If you missed his killer talk at @AmOrnith #AOS24, Ben Tonelli from the @mwtingley lab just brought out his paper in @Ecology_Letters testing the drivers of migratory #phenology for 222 Nearctic #bird species! Temperature and snowpack are most critical! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Congratulations Nihon Hidankyo for this incredibly well deserved #NobelPeacePrize. The hibakusha, the inspirational survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the catastrophic impacts of nuclear weapons and push for their total elimination.
BREAKING NEWS
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPeacePrize to the Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo. This grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, is receiving the peace prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.

I have just arrived at @FundacionMigres in Tarifa, S Spain, for 6 weeks of @Vogelwarte_scie #insectmigration fieldwork as part of @Birgen_Haest's Move in Europe project!
We have radars to monitor insects (!!) each side of the Straits of Gibraltar (1 in Ceuta, 1 in Tarifa) as well as insect traps in Tarifa, Gibraltar, and Ceuta to find out the types of insects migrating.
Here is the radar in Ceuta looking towards one of the Pillars of Hercules, the Rock of Gibraltar.
I'll be sharing loads here of the adventures I'm having.
So excited!!

🌏80% of our world's population lives under light-polluted skies.
How does that affect wildlife🦉, and what can we do about it? 🌆

Problem is that after a few years, most people normalize extreme climate as normal
They also normalize disappearance of world Bees insects birds wildlife, marine life, forests wetlands and their replacement with a sterile barren lifeless landscape as normal

Les scientifiques suisses alertent sur la situation de la biodiversité en Suisse: elle est véritablement malmenée et nécessite plus d'actions et de moyens, contrairement à ce que prétend M. Albert Rösti, conseiller fédéral.

Wave or stream? @rafnuss and co-authors @CornellBirds found hat seasonal bird migration resembles a stream where bird populations on the ground are continuously replaced by new individuals, thanks to data from radars and @Team_eBird observations. More on doi.org/10.1111/ecog.07107
