Anak Krakatau’s nearly 25-hour eruption may have sent more than ash into the sky. Volcanic eruptions can inject huge amounts of water vapour into the stratosphere, where it can affect atmospheric temperatures and circulation.
A recent study estimates that volcanic eruptions and extreme wildfires added up to 203 million tonnes of water vapour to the stratosphere between 2005 and 2021, accounting for 36% of the observed rise. This increase can have severe impacts on the planet's climate and weather patterns.
