Wholeheartedly disagree once again. Roger Goodell said on overdrive last week, it’s the media’s job to bring the game to the fans. I agree with him. And I think this year is a perfect case study to prove my point. Edmonton has a way bigger fan turn out due to on field product and gameplay. It’s been a crazy turn around. They also have a significant amount of local media who talk about the team and cover it from a purely football perspective. @yegsportstalk would be top of mind but I also see podcasts and other forms of digital media talking Elks. BC Lions have done a great job with what exactly? I love the amount of resources they’ve done from a marketing side but clearly it’s not having the impact they hoped for. The fan turnout is stagnant in comparison to last year. It’s such a tiring and uneducated take to sling around “gimmicky” marketing for long term fan sustainability. Snoop dog performing at the opener had little to no success on fan growth or retention. All it did was rig one game fan numbers. The underlying issue is your predisposition to the CFL. You think the league is trash -> Are you not the same individual asking players if NCAA teams could beat CFL teams? When you come from the position that the league is trash, you throw around gimmicky marketing ideas and call it “being creative”. When you come from the position that the league is not trash. You push the actual football and on field product. And part of that equation is having local and national media talk specifically and majority about the football itself. If someone writes about the actual football and covers it, it won’t be long until there is an increased audience.
