I am deeply concerned by the escalating situation in Albania. Local authorities must refrain from aggression against peaceful protesters, and everyone on the ground must work to deescalate and prevent further violence.
Michigan is home to a strong and vibrant Albanian American community, and I know these developments are very personal for many Michiganders. The Albanian people deserve a government that respects their fundamental rights and upholds the rule of law. That’s why I will continue to advocate for peace and justice for all Albanians.

Albania presents itself in Brussels as a reliable NATO ally and an EU accession frontrunner. At home, the police meet students and minors with rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades. Journalists are beaten while doing their job.
NATO and the EU are alliances of democracies. Both are built on the rule of law and respect for citizens. Tear gas against students and assaults on journalists say otherwise. Values are proven at home. The government of Albania is currently failing that test.
Blaming “foreign interference” for young Albanians’ anger at corruption and impunity is an insult to them. Every case of police violence must be investigated. Albanians must get to decide their future.

The IDU is deeply concerned by the escalating unrest in #Albania, where student-led protests that began in #Tirana on October 13, 2026, have now spread beyond the capital. The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are cornerstones of every democratic society.
The IDU calls on the Government of Albania and its security forces to refrain from the use of violence against protesters, to exercise maximum restraint and proportionality, and to respect the fundamental rights of every citizen. Reports of rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades being deployed against crowds largely made up of students are alarming. Any instances of excessive force must be investigated independently and transparently, and those responsible held to account.

No, Prime Minister @ediramaal. It is not the students who are putting Albania’s European future at risk. It is the arrogance and repression of a government that refuses to listen to its own citizens that threaten the European future #Albania deserves 🇦🇱🇪🇺

Esto no es Francia, ni Milán, tampoco es Bélgica.
Es Tirana, Albania.
En teoría todos piden lo mismo.
