I’m happy to announce Aztec’s post-quantum roadmap. I can’t predict if or when quantum computers will happen, but we have been preparing since day 1 of designing Aztec.
Aztec today is highly quantum resistant and our protocol already defends against harvest-now-decrypt-later attacks. Migrating to a fully post-quantum system is a major challenge but one we are prepared for.
By the end of 2030, Aztec is going to be fully post-quantum.

Earlier this year me & my team intensely focused on AI-accelerating Aztec’s prover tech. A lot of staring at benchmarks and algorithms and flame graphs.
I never imagined that such improvements could be made on top of the work we already did. Just remarkable.

Justin Drake’s call for “bunker mode” and mass migration, alongside talk of cryptographic breaks within months, is hyperbolic. There is no evidence of a new attack on elliptic curves or any quantitative basis for a short-term timetable for such attacks emerging.
Prominent researchers need to consider how non-experts will receive their language. Speculating that within months individuals could break cryptographic primitives that the internet and digital economy rely on carries consequences. It is a huge leap from AI making progress in other fields of mathematics to predicting the imminent failure of primitives that have faced decades of cryptanalysis.
The idea that hash functions are safer from AI than elliptic curves is speculation. Hash functions contain structure, and we model them as random oracles without justifying proofs.
There is no evidence that elliptic curve cryptography is more vulnerable to AI than symmetric cryptography. If historical human-led analysis is any predictor of the future, the opposite is more likely.
The worst possible reaction to AI developments is to rush into new cryptographic primitives, away from multi-decade old hardened primitives, because somebody is claiming they are safe. I worry that this is an inevitable consequence of the current discourse.
Because of the last 48 hours users are worrying about speculative non-existent black hats, who apparently have the capability of signing OS upgrades and forging bank credentials, from draining their wallets. To protect against speculative threats Ethereum is pulling talent and attention into base-layer primitives and technological iteration, instead of increasing demand for block space by building compelling applications users want and love.
I don’t want to dismiss the considerable advances in mathematics that AI is driving. It is important to understand the nature of these improvements. If its success in other mathematical fields applies to elliptic curves, my expectation is that AI will grind its way to finding algorithms that improve on the current state of the art. That could mean shaving off a few bits of security. It would be prudent to discuss whether we need to increase key sizes and by how much.
I can’t guarantee that AI won’t find total breaks, and neither can anyone else. My speculation as a domain expert does not make my speculation authoritative.
We should also be using AI to investigate whether searching the parameter space can yield new, more secure curves.
We can investigate whether some of these “structure = bad” hunches have any basis in reality. For example, we could use AI to see if the extra structure in Koblitz curves enables attacks beyond the small speedups we know about. This would give us actual evidence to make informed decisions.
If non-experts hear that the cryptography underpinning the digital economy could fail within months, the rational response is to withdraw all digital money (on-chain and off) and hoard gold under the bed.
I think the past 48 hours has unnecessarily undermined confidence in the entire concept of blockchains and digital money.

Ethereum has a privacy problem hiding in plain sight.
Every payment can expose your wallet, balance, transaction history, and counterparties.
@aztecnetwork's bet: privacy becomes Ethereum’s “HTTPS moment” - not a niche feature, but the infrastructure that finally makes onchain finance usable at scale.

Bitcoin researchers just proposed pivoting Bitcoin into... Aztec, amid all the privacy hype.
a new Shielded Bitcoin proposal wants to bring private $BTC transfers directly to Bitcoin L1, without changing Bitcoin consensus.
• encrypted notes
• nullifiers
• Merkle trees
• ZK proofs
Bitcoin itself mostly acts as the publication + ordering layer.
the shielded state gets reconstructed and verified above it.
sounds familiar?
private state → notes
spending private state → nullifiers
validity → ZK proofs
read access → viewing keys
the difference is where they stop.
Shielded Bitcoin uses this architecture for one narrow job: private $BTC transfers.
@aztecnetwork takes the same general model much further: programmable private state + private execution.
and the most interesting part?
the paper itself points to Aztec’s direction as extremely important, while acknowledging that general private execution is significantly more complex than private transfers.
not bad for project with token ethereum:0xa27ec0006e59f245217ff08cd52a7e8b169e62d2 sitting at a ~$49m market cap, roughly 535x smaller than Zcash, 120x smaller than NEAR, and ~5x smaller than Zama?
Bitcoin is slowly trying to make a machine built for transparent money do things it was never really designed for.
maybe instead of bolting wings onto a car, at some point you just use the plane that was built to fly?
Developers just figured out a way to hide who sent bitcoin, who received it, and how much moved, without changing Bitcoin itself.
This new proposed idea is not a fork around the protocol or new cryptocurrency. This is how Bitcoin was designed, a base layer people can innovate on without asking permission.
On Thursday, researcher Misha Komarov and colleagues published Shielded Bitcoin, a Zcash-style shielded pool for Bitcoin’s base layer.
Encrypted notes and zero-knowledge proofs ride along in ordinary Bitcoin transactions. Separate software checks that no coins are created from nothing and none are spent twice.
There is no company running the pool, no sidechain, and no soft fork. Funds go in and out through cryptographic vaults Komarov has been building, called PIPEs, so no federation has to hold the bitcoin.
Miners do not enforce the privacy rules. Invalid shielded data can still land in a block, indexers simply ignore it.
The trade is: Bitcoin stays conservative, and the experiment lives on top of it. If it works, private transfers arrive the way most of Bitcoin’s best ideas have, not by rewriting the constitution, but by building on the settlement layer everyone already trusts.

It’s cool. I’d be missing a trick if I didn’t say:
We already built Aztec to provide these features to Ethereum at the start of the year.
- Native account abstraction;
- Native fee abstraction (pay via any kind of function);
- Nullifiers as nonces;
- Recent roots;
- Inclusion of all private txs;
(Plus extras: function privacy; private composition of private functions; composition with external snarks; fast client-side recursive proofs in a phone browser; tailor-made private smart contract syntax; cheaper than L1, more things)
Unstoppable, unconditional, trustless privacy is already achieved on Ethereum with Aztec.
