Braelyn's mother said something tonight that deserves to be read twice: promising science means very little if the patients who need it cannot access it.
I made this explainer because her story has a mechanism behind it, and that mechanism turns on one detail most people will read past.
Her tumor tissue was properly preserved.
That is not paperwork.
A dendritic cell vaccine is built from the patient's own tumor, and it has to be whole tumor material, because the immune system's instruction step requires intact protein in order to work at all. A fragment cannot do it. A prediction cannot do it. The tissue is the curriculum, and it exists for a few hours in an operating room and then it is gone forever.
Braelyn nearly lost that window. Not because the science was unavailable, but because nobody told her family it mattered before she went under.
Dr. Liau operated, removed roughly 90% of a tumor spanning three lobes, and the tissue was preserved and sent to England. She has had three induction doses and a booster. Tonight the UCLA tumor board found no visible tumor, including the portion that had to be left behind.
Her radiation, her surgery, her vaccine and her Keytruda are all in that result, and I'm not going to pretend I can separate them. What I can say is that three of those four options were available to her the whole time, and the fourth almost wasn't, for a reason that had nothing to do with biology.
Every glioblastoma patient going to the OR this week faces the same window.
Most of them will never be told it exists.
That is a fixable problem. It should already have been fixed.

Great story behind the original “This is Anfield” sign that was just sold at auction for £149,500 and how it ended up with the current sellers:

The original “This Is Anfield” sign was first hung in the old main stand players tunnel in 1972. It was the idea of a groundsman at the club who brought the suggestion to club secretary, Peter Robinson for approval.
It was designed to psychologically intimidate opposing teams and remind Liverpool players of the club’s standard. Originally supposed to say “Welcome To Anfield”, manager Bill Shankly rejected the original wording as being too friendly and instead changed it to “This Is Anfield”.
It’s commonly accepted that the original version of the sign was taken down and replaced by newly appointed manager Bob Paisley in 1974 for a new one with an updated design, but dated photo evidence from the signing photos of Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalglish and Frank McGarvey show the sign wasn’t actually removed from the tunnel until 1979, which means it was still in the tunnel for LFC’s two first European Cups and 3 more First Division Titles.
When the time came to replace the old sign it was taken by former player and manager Roy Evans and gifted to Ronald (Ron) Wilson, a former player of LFC boys team.
Ron was contacted by Roy about having something he may be interested in and to go and join him at a reserves game he was manager for at the time. From Liverpool but now living on the Isle Of Man, Ron with his wife Doreen and children Ian & Lynn made the trip over to Liverpool to meet with Roy, with Ron joining Roy in the dugout and Doreen, Ian and Lynn watching from the stands. After the game the sign was handed over to Ron and brought back to the Isle of Man.
From 1979-2000 the sign was hung in the bar of the Rutland, a hotel in Douglas owned by the Wilson family. Before it was installed it had an aluminum frame fitted for preservation.
After the hotel was sold the sign was then passed down to Ian & Lynn, the current owners of the sign, and was then placed into storage.
After years in storage it was then hung on display in Ian’s office at work from the mid 2010’s until his retirement in early 2026, and was placed back into storage permanently.

Looking at these three photos reminds me just how much life can change when you trust the path God has for you. In the first photo, I had just earned my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. At the time, I truly believed that was the direction my life was going. Then, lmI started mowing lawns for people who couldn’t do it themselves. What began as a simple act of kindness slowly became something much bigger. I realized that what fulfilled me most wasn’t sitting behind a computer, it was serving people, hearing their stories, and knowing that something as simple as cutting a lawn could make someone’s day a little easier. That realization led me back to school, where I earned my master’s degree in Social Work.
Today, the third photo represents where that unexpected journey has taken me, running an organization built around helping others and inspiring young people to serve their communities. In a way, both degrees still play a part in what I do. My computer science background helps with our websites, coding, technology, and everything happening behind the scenes, while social work connects directly to the people, families, and communities we serve. But neither degree could have taught me the lesson that this journey has: sometimes your purpose finds you in the place you least expect it.
As a kid, I hated mowing lawns. Now I wake up every day grateful for the opportunity to mow lawns for free for people in need. That still amazes me. So if your life doesn’t look exactly like the plan you had for yourself, don’t lose faith. You never know what God is preparing you for, what door He is about to open, or how something you once disliked could one day become part of your purpose. I thought I was choosing a career. God was leading me toward a calling.
