I don't usually disagree strongly with @aysrick, but he came out swinging this morning, saying that an expansion into a serious theatrical model will not change Netflix's fortunes.
It is true that it does not answer all questions. But it would, as the WB purchase would have, expand the overall business and give Netflix more flexibility on how it milks revenue (actual cash) from its massive annual content spend.
Theatrical will not become dominant over Streaming for Netflix... or for any outlet (add Linear). But it could, by 2028, take the company from $55b in revenues to $70b in gross revenues and expand the range of choices that Netflix has to maneuver in a way that none of the other attempts to expand the business have. And it is more controllable and predictable.
Additionally, expansions into other areas - like producing for other platforms - could expand the overall business even further.

While Netflix obviously has issues, I don't think any of them are solved by building out its theatrical business. "We'd like to see them do it because it's good for theatrical" is not the same as "This would be good for Netflix's bottom line"
Also, Netflix is a global company...
Replying to @sharonwaxman
4/ Pam Abdy/Mike de Luca are telling Ted Sarandos that if they don’t commit to longer theatrical windows, major dirctors will not come work with them at Netflix.
I think we are long past the time when anyone should be listening to James Carville.
James Carville says he'd rather have Republicans keep control of the House than Democrats winning the chamber by 5 seats.
"I would rather the Republicans keep the House by five than the Democrats win by five, because if that happens, they’re hostage to the DSA. Like, Hakeem cannot move. There’s no place for him to go."
If I could change one thing that has been normalized during the Trump era, it is the conservatives inability to simply address the topic at hand. It's always deflection, it's bringing up something they claim Dem did instead.
Yes, of course you're right. It's one-sided. Conservatives never organize boycotts against actors or projects they consider to be "too woke." Or run them through the conservative media outrage machine. That never happens.
You are like a guitarist who can only play two chords
Stan played Trump in the 2024 film "The Apprentice." It was not a flattering portrayal. The idea that he's some sort of based partisan conservative is absurd.
Yet, because he has the audacity to say "when did conservative become so wrong," he's going to be put through the ringer.
Normal is unacceptable to the DSA Left.
Lonestar put on a great show. And my wife and I were able to dance to our wedding song. Plus, she got a guitar pick. An absolutely perfect night
As a Dem in Minnesota..please come here. Insist that Republican candidates publicly embrace you. I dare you.
I am no expert, but I am pretty sure that's why the word "No" is included with "Kings."
This is like claiming that ordering a hamburger with "No mustard" means mustard is already on the sandwich & now it needs to be removed.

So my original reporting from earlier in the month that the layoffs would be in the range of 5-10 percent turned out to be pretty accurate
Netflix cuts about 6% of staff. Sarandos and Peters tell staffers: “Our mission—to entertain the world—is ambitious, and delivering on it requires us to be disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources.” W/@jtoonkel
