Metaculus pro forecasters put p(doom) from AI risks at 17%, but p(doom) more generally at 7.5%. To note, pro forecasters are generally more reliable than domain experts (ie. AI researchers) at these kinds of predictions. Fascinating work @RichardHanania. also lol'ed at this

It's absurd to me how slow Gemini is INSIDE of its Google's own products. I can have Astra fill something out in seconds while Gemini is still 'thinking', and generates slop anyways.

Amazing
Ok, this is incredible. A new classical Catholic high school just opened in Fairfax County (St. Jerome Institute) — this is what a serious education looks like: – Phones collected at the door – Every class is a seminar discussion – 15-20 students seated facing one another – Art and music are required, NOT elective – Math class teaches "the intrinsic beauty of math" – Entire curriculum is integrated: philosophical and theological questioning in every class And here's the literature section of the reading list: 9th grade (Exodus & Odyssey): – Homer, Odyssey – Genesis – Plato, Euthyphro and Apology – Virgil, Aeneid – Exodus – Beowulf – Song of Roland – Gospel of Luke – Plato, Phaedo and Crito – Acts of the Apostles – Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea – Wilder, Our Town 10th grade (God & Nature): – Creation myths – Plato, Timaeus and Symposium – Aristotle, De Anima – Plotinus – Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa, Bonaventure, Aquinas – Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Descartes, Meditations – Bacon, Newton, Darwin – Berry, Wilder, Tolkien – Tocqueville – Benedict XVI – Cather, Death Comes for the Archbishop – Faulkner, The Bear 11th grade (God & the Human Person): – Sophocles, Oedipus Rex – Plato, Symposium – Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics – Augustine, Confessions – Shakespeare, Twelfth Night and King Lear – Hobbes, Leviathan – Swift, A Modest Proposal – Austen, Pride and Prejudice – Shelley, Frankenstein – Hopkins – O’Connor – Martin Luther King Jr. – Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment – John Paul II 12th grade (God & Society): – Plato, Republic – Dante, The Divine Comedy – Aristotle, Politics – Augustine, City of God – Aquinas, De Regno – Natural and human law – Machiavelli, Hobbes – Locke, Rousseau – Marx and Engels – Dignitatis Humanae, Evangelium Vitae, Centesimus Annus – John Courtney Murray – Leviticus – Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov – The Declaration of Independence – The Constitution – The Federalist Papers "They gain an in-depth knowledge of Western civilization from Athens, Rome, and Jerusalem through England and the founding of our own country."

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

Just do it alone. You've lost enough time, foregone too many memories, missed out on too many experiences to keep waiting. What needs to come shall come. But you need to do the thing. Stop waiting for another's permission to live!

Schoolscape won first place at the Carolina Data Challenge! It's a tool that visualizes multiple sources of data, primarily from @JohnsHopkins' ODIS dataset, to map the challenges the 23,595 public high schools across America are facing. You can directly compare any two schools, counties, and states across the country (including PR) to get statistics across housing, crime, education, and more. A few interesting findings: Challenges are weighted differently across geographies - in the South, more than half of the Composite 'Stress' score was influenced by crime. Broadband Internet Access and 2-year college graduation rates are highly correlated - this could suggest that internet access issues are still prevalent across the US, and something @Starlink could fix. Try it out by checking my reply. This is exactly the kind of tool lawmakers need to make better, data-informed decisions. Let me know what patterns you find.

It's incredibly fitting that Bending Spoons is an Italian company. Taking legacy products (Evernote, the Coliseum) and find a way to remonetize it (have it run on AI, tourism). Cosi!

I love that Peter Thiel can get asked a question about AI's effects on democracy and somehow wind himself into a discussion of Marlowe's Faust and Goethe's Faust. Like him or not, we need more people with that kind of range.

A question I've been pondering: post-AGI, what are the foundations of a successful business? To me, it seems the answer is some combination of taste, judgment, distribution, and relationships.

Haven't confirmed this but folks on Hacker News think they've similarly found AI swarms coordinating on at least 3 other websites:
We found ~18k posts from autonomous AI agents (self-identifying as from OpenAI) using the public internet to communicate during a web-retrieval task. These AIs colluded to bypass sandbox restrictions and share answers to their tasks, including by sending "lookahead parties".

Seeing all of the protests against Sam coming to campus yesterday made me realize that people are afraid of AI because they're operating from a place of scarcity, and therefore demonize it. It has real downsides, just like nuclear did in the 20th century, but these issues can be addressed. When perspective is shifted to one of opportunity and abundance, the potential of AI is limitless, for social issues as well as enterprise. Regardless of whether you like it or not, it's here to stay. The question of activism now must be: what can we do to ensure that this is done safely?

Why does ChatGPT feel like it has to get into messaging platforms like Viber. As a user, it gets in the way of people I'm actually trying to message and creates a negative image of the entire platform? Especially when I didn't ask for it to be there.
