Would love input on something that's been puzzling me (thread)
CDC estimates that only 1 in 4 COVID cases is reported. Since 48 million cases have been reported, implies there have been ~192 million cases or 58% of US population. Conservatively, 50% of the US has had COVID.
In total, ~85% of the population, maybe more, have significant immunity to COVID. How do we square this reality with case trajectories)? Will cases collapse (Omicron aside) once another ~5% of the population is infected or vaccinated (reaching 90% of population with immunity)?
I would love some expert insight as to why we do not seem to be approaching herd immunity. Where do my assumptions (or conclusions) break down? @eli_sprecher @alexismadrigal @zeynep @ProfEmilyOster
