What dopey moron Aaronovitch deliberately decides to misunderstand is there is nothing wrong with ethnicity as a component of nationalism, every other nation with a millennium of history accepts that, just as there is nothing wrong with accepting the gentle blurring at the edges over centuries which have produced integrated extensions to the English population. What grips people is the last 50 years ideological fire hose of imposing a new breed of civic English uninterested in integration, seeking English nationality for the passport, family visa applications & completion of the benefits form
Although he made a bit of prick of himself with his strident insistence he is English despite his efforts to suck up to the Ghanian community, the fact is no one really minds. I am English.
I’m old enough to remember when considering yourself to be English meant that broadly speaking you’d been born here, grown up here, went to school here, lived here, followed English cultural customs and to all intents and purposes, were English.
It wasn’t controversial.
Most normal people who describe themselves as English mean this, in much the same way as they would describe themselves as a Londoner, or a Mancunian or a Brummie.; They aren’t referring to their ethnicity or trying to erase yours.
It’s not complicated.
The racists and grifters desperately trying to carve out careers as political commentators or angling to be Restore Britain candidates are redefining it exclusively as “ethnically English” because, much like the Black Lives Matter activists, their racial identity is their entire grift. They need to shift the Overton Window on the idea.
Given most people would struggle to name their great-great-grandparents the idea that you should be able to trace your lineage back to the Domesday book is ridiculous.
English is my national identity. It’s taken until I was middle-aged for it to suddenly be questioned. I’m not about to stop being English, supporting the England team or start having to justify my Englishness to satisfy anybody’s “papers please” witch hunt.

WWII veterans marched to show solidarity with Enoch Powell in London, and WWII veterans were totally disgusted with the direction Britain was taking post-war. They did not fight Hitler to support mass immigration, multiculturalism, DEI, positive discrimination, women wearing burkhas, and so on.
They did not die for Tower Hamlets’ Bangladeshi enclaves or for Pakistani-heritage men involved in child sexual exploitation gangs. They did not die for third-world immigrants occupying social housing and living off the welfare state. They did not die for Afro-Caribbean MPs arguing for multi-billion-pound slavery reparations. They did not die for that.
Their values were the total opposite of yours.

I have made almost exactly the same argument elsewhere.
In my view, we will eventually look back on the British governments of 2010 to the present in much the same way we now look back on the governments of the 1930s. The failure has been that profound.
That is why I am so angry with them. Like Syed, I am a classical liberal. Yet our successive British leaders have failed to do what was necessary to defend the peace, prosperity and political order they inherited at the end of the Cold War. Shame on all of them.
