remembering Steve i grew up with beige boxes. then i moved to Canada and saw the iMac G4. how can computers be so beautiful? i couldn’t afford a Mac, so i made my PC look like one. changed the icons, the fonts, the windows. learned to make those shiny, lickable buttons. that’s how i got into interface design. i saw something i loved and wanted to make things like it. i burned DVDs of Steve’s keynotes and studied them. watched them again and again. there was so much care in the products, and so much joy in showing people what they could do. my first iPod was a black nano. i carried it everywhere. then the iPhone happened and changed the world. it felt like anything was possible. since he died, i’ve felt us getting stuck in a loop. constant refinement. better supply chains. more ways to keep people scrolling. so much talent spent on tiny improvements, so little room for something truly great and heartfelt. the keynotes get more cinematic every year. i still miss the live demos. someone onstage playing with something they helped make. the excitement, the jokes, the things that went wrong. it felt human. it was fun. we made computers faster. phones thinner. added more cameras. made machines smarter than us at more and more things. somehow, we’ve also become more disconnected and lonely. we spend so much energy trying to beat humans. i wish we spent more time learning from people’s lives and making them better. when i work, i still sometimes think: what would Steve do? i’ll never know. i’m sad i never got to work with him. but his work reached a kid with a beige PC and changed the course of his life. i wonder how many others have a story like mine. i’ve kept these words with me: “the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” there’s still so much worth making. things we can put our hearts into. things that make someone feel what i felt when i first saw that iMac. thank you, Steve. 💛

We’re releasing Tomo Interest Groups. The video below is an actual Tomo Interest Group interaction that a user shared with us (names anonymized) As Tomo learns more about you, it places you in group chats with other Tomo users pursuing similar goals. When Tomo offered this to 100 users studying for the LSAT, 60% of them opted-in and got placed into group chats with other Tomo users. They then traded notes and coordinated group study sessions, facilitated by Tomo. As more users join Tomo than ever before, they contribute to a pool of people with shared intentions waiting to discover each other. We’re rolling this out to more Tomo users with proven interests in hobbies, sports, careers, and side quests, because people go further together.

*ring ring* Today, we’re releasing a preview version of Tomo Voice. Tomosapiens can talk with their Tomo by calling the phone number they already text with, powered by OpenAI Live. In rare cases, your Tomo may also decide to call you first. Calling is especially joyful knowing that Tomo can take real-world actions and update your garden of apps with a realtime verifiable trail of texts and images. Voice is another step towards making accomplishing more in life even more delightful for everyday people. It’s been a ton of fun to try. I hope you pick up!

The first-ever purchase made on Tomo came from a user in Hawaii who started using it because she'd always wanted to learn Japanese. Tomo spent $81 on a Japanese textbook for her. Next came $55 whey protein from a user working with Tomo to get in shape, then a $109 sunrise alarm clock from a user working with Tomo to sleep better. Consumers let their personal agent make purchases when they trust that it has their best interests in mind. Pushing people towards their personal ambitions is a great way to start building that trust among everyday people: purchasing items as aspirational as a textbook earns the right to purchase items as mundane as toilet paper. We’re partnering with Stripe so that tomosapiens can approve purchases directly through Link, further closing the gap between aspiration and action for real people.

I left @A24 to start Osmo, a storytelling studio with a software factory. Today, we’re launching @osmo_studio to the public: an end-to-end editable video platform that turns Figma, code and reference videos into fully editable motion. We also raised a $5M seed to build it.

It's been 3 years since AI exploded, but nobody's life has improved outside of Silicon Valley. Tomo is for real humans, like my little brother Lucas and 10,000 other humans taking a chance on themselves every single day.

The key to saving the environment is not looking backward, it’s moving forward. I realized this the first time I visited Italy twenty years ago. Everything was clean and green. The rivers sparkled. The lesson for me was obvious: the answer is not underdevelopment. The answer is progress. When China was poor, the air was so polluted that people could barely see the blue sky. Today, blue skies have returned to their cities. Development does not only create wealth, it also provides the resources needed to restore and protect the environment. Some environmentalists want us to preserve every aspect of our biodiversity, including the mosquitoes for example, so that researchers can fly in once every ten years from their universities (which build particle accelerators and billion-dollar laboratories with their pocket money), study our ecosystems, and count how many people died from dengue outbreaks. They want to buy our air through carbon credits. If carbon credits were such a great deal, they would be selling them to us, not the other way around. Cleaning every river, lake, and water source in El Salvador, and ensuring they remain clean and sparkling, would cost roughly $12 billion. Where is that money supposed to come from without economic development? Carbon credits? The path forward for our country is the path of Japan and Singapore, not the path of the Congo.

Crypto privacy is needed if you want to make API calls without compromising the information of your access patterns. eg. even with a local AI agent, you can learn a lot about what someone is doing if you see all of their search engine calls first-order solution to that is to make those calls through mixnet but then (or in fact, even without the mixnet) the providers will get DoSed, and they will demand an anti-DoS mechanism, and realistically payment per call by default that will be credit card or some corposlop "yeah we'll get to the privacy later" stablecoin thing so we need crypto privacy But yes, for privacy you have to think full stack. Local AI agent layer is very important. It is like longevity: if there are 10 things damaging your body, curing one of them increases your longevity by 11%, curing two by 25%, and curing three by 42% (1 / (1 - 0.3) minus 100% base). Risks from data leakage are similar, and so mitigations similarly compound super-additively.

AI inside, crypto outside. Within your tribe's trusted perimeter, you give AI all the context and let it figure it out. But outside your tribe's trusted perimeter, you hit a wall of AI spam. Now you need cryptographic verification to see what's true.
