правильно, не приезжайте сюда, это ужасный остров, а жизнь тут невыносима
i see a lot of ppl moving to Cyprus
i've been there 5 times, have a ton of friends living on the island, and considered moving there as well
but i decided against it because Cyprus' only advantage is taxes, and everything else is pretty terrible
1. climate and nature
ppl on here say Cyprus has amazing weather
and this is true, but only 4 months a year
Cyprus is awesome September-October and March-early June. The average temperature is 20-25 degrees Celsius, the sea is warm, you can hike around the island, and spend a lot of time outside
but when the summer comes the place becomes a hell on earth. It doesn't get below 40 degrees, and most ppl leave the island or spend 90% of time stuck inside in AC'd spaces
winter is not much better. The temperature drops to 7-10 degrees, but the cold feels much worse than on the mainland, because of how damp and humid it is
most apartments are ill-equipped for cold temperatures so you will be freezing all the time
it gets rainy and stormy, and you will get the same depressive vibe as in Northern Europe – but without culture and cozy coffee shops
when it comes to nature – there are interesting places to hike, like Mount Olympus (with a NATO military radar) or the insanely beautiful Aphrodite Trail, but like with most things on the island the selection is very limited
hiking along with cycling and water sports is one of 3 interesting activities you can do there
so in about 3 months, you will have visited all the interesting nature spots and will feel bored
2. transport
there is hardly anything cultural going on the island, and for all interesting events you will need to fly to mainland Europe
and it is a pain in itself
Cyprus has 2 major airports – Paphos and Larnaca
There is no airport in Limassol (and you will probably be living there, if you don't want to hang yourself from boredom on your second week)
Getting from Limassol to any of the airports takes about 1.5 hrs. You need to drive a car (and then you will be tied to it), get on an overcrowded bus (the public transportation is a joke in Cyprus) or get a cab
and cabs are another kind of Cyprus insanity
in Cyprus the number of cab drivers is legally limited to 1800 for the whole island, so you will be hunting for an overpriced cab driver with a terrible attitude
you will pay a minimum of €70-100 for a trip to the airport – often double what your ticket costs
if you live on Cyprus long term, you will need a car for everything. The buses between cities are rare, overcrowded and often don't have AC (critical in summer there)
and you will absolutely need to travel between cities often. For example, if you live in Limassol, the closest proper mall with stores for you will be the one in Larnaca (1.5 hour drive)
3. urban environment
i mentioned Limassol – that's the only place worth living on the Island.
The other 3 cities are a complete disaster. Nicosia (the capital) gets scorchingly hot in summer, there is no sea there, and you just feel isolated.
Paphos and Larnaca feel like German/English resort towns from the 60s, if you are moving to Cyprus for a young entrepreneurial vibe, you will be disappointed
ppl post pictures of Limassol skyscrapers but they don't tell you one thing – those are literally the only 2 skyscrapers on the island
Limassol is a fine place to spend a week or two. I had an amazing 10 days of lock-in there after I quit my first 9-5. I read @levelsio book "Make" every day, took a dip in the ocean and spent the rest of my day building my first online business
but on the second week i realized Limassol had only one proper street, and the rest of the city felt like a Middle Eastern settlement – terrible architecture, chaotic and absolutely nothing to do
at first you feel the abundance of restaurants and coffee places, but then you realize you visited all of them in several days and the selection is limited
4. the society
european founders move to Cyprus looking for a crowd of other founders and ambitious people
and you will find them on the island – but not as many as you expect
most people you meet there, actually work normal 9-5 jobs, there are a lot of programmers from Russia whose companies fled there after the war, a lot of gambling and adult industries
and while this crowd is better than the infinite art and political science students you meet in Europe (at least they earn their own money), don't expect the Silicon Valley vibe
the Cyprus society actually functions on two levels – you have the 10% tech ppl who move there for taxes or their companies move them, and you have the 90% of locals
and locals have their own thing going. The Cyprus society is a very traditionalist version of mainland Greek society
family ties and reputation are important there, and it's also pretty closed off to foreigners. You will interact with Cypriots in a business context (like buy a coffee, or buy an apartment 😅), and they will smile at you, joke around and be chill
but you will never actually break into their local ties, and it will take you an insane amount of money to make Cypriot friends. Not least because Cypriots like the simple countryside-seaside lifestyle, and your X-tech-AI capitalist bullshit will sound like nonsense for them (and they will seem like hillbillies for you in return)
so your friend pool and dating pool will be limited to the expats, and among them – you guessed it, most women are either married already or are too weird to date
dating is one of the primary reasons most of my friends leave Cyprus – in Cyprus it's actually possible to scroll through the whole Tinder in a couple of days, and you will keep bumping into the same people all over again. Like with everything in Cyprus, the selection of people for dating is limited
