Congratulations to @UtahChemistry Assistant Professor Aaron Puri (@awpuri) on receiving the Simons Foundation Early Career Award! Puri was recognized for his work in pioneering research into methane-mitigating microbial ecosystems. science.utah.edu/faculty/fac…
I am co-organizing the "Defining the Chemistry of Microbiomes" symposium with Helen Blackwell at the #ACSFall2024 meeting in Denver, CO! I am very excited about the speaker lineup. Hope to see you there! @AmerChemSociety @ACS_DivBioChem
We have a new paper out in @ISMEJournal !
Linking methanotroph phenotypes to genotypes using a simple spatially resolved model ecosystem

Grad student @BealsDelaney developed a simple system for growing aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria in the lab in a way that is more similar to how they grow in the environment.
Using this system, she identified new genes that are important for behaviors that would be overlooked in standard planktonic cultures. Congrats

We collaborated with the Swanson team to understand abiotic lasso peptide folding. Led by @gcdahora, we used new algorithms to better understand how acyclic microcin J25 peptides can adopt pre-lasso folds. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jac… @J_A_C_S @UtahChemistry @UUtah
We have a new paper out in @mbiojournal! journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128…
A widespread methylotroph acyl-homoserine lactone synthase produces a new quorum sensing signal that regulates swarming in Methylobacterium fujisawaense.
We identified the quorum sensing signal product of the largest family of acyl-homoserine lactone synthases in an important group of methylotrophic bacteria. Congrats Mike Wallace and @DCNashty, and thanks to @agr_chemistry for his help.
We have a new preprint! Methanotroph phenotypic heterogeneity in a methane-oxygen counter gradient. Great work, @BealsDelaney! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
This was a lot of fun. Thanks for including me, @danudwary and @JMWinterlab!

please check out the natural product-inspired peptide macrocyclization method we developed, these reactions are fast and simple to perform @UtahChemistry @UUtah @J_A_C_S pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.102…
Hi- we are writing a review on using inverse stable isotopic labeling for studying natural products. If you know of a paper where researchers grew a producing organism on a 13C-labeled carbon source and then fed 12C precursors to look for incorporation, please let me know!
We are looking for a lab manager! The ideal candidate is a recent/upcoming college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, etc looking to gain research experience before applying to grad or med school in 1-2 years.
