Unfortunately, a culture of illiteracy is upon us. My take in the Wall Street Journal:
Daniel Akst’s book review—“Is Reading a Dead Letter?” (Bookshelf, Oct. 8) of James Marriott’s “The New Dark Ages: The Death of Reading and the Dawn of the Post-Literate Society”—paints a disturbing picture of what is rapidly becoming an illiterate society.
As a professor in my 57th year at Johns Hopkins, I can report that neither Mr. Akst’s review nor Mr. Marriott’s book exaggerate. When I arrived, a green rookie, I asked a Hopkins legend and great pedagogue, Prof. G. Wilson Shaffer, for advice. He counseled that, for the best results, one should throw students into the deep end of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library and see if they can swim. Shaffer’s method worked like a charm.
But, about 10 years ago, I detected that troubles were brewing. I would ask students, juniors and seniors, to return library books for me, and they would ask where the library was. The first few times this happened, I thought they were pulling my leg. But they weren’t. They informed me that they had never been in the library. When I asked whether they had ever read a book that wasn’t a textbook, the shocking answer was often “no.”
Unfortunately, with each passing year, the descent into a “culture of illiteracy” has only accelerated.

My kids have measles, I can’t afford diesel, I lost my job, and my country just lost a war to Iran. But at least now I can watch firing squad executions on TV.

Bill Burr: “How big does your yacht have to be? I have no problem with people having zillions of dollars, but pay the workers, give them benefits. Most people don’t have ridiculous demands. It’s like I would like to have a family, be able to clothe, shelter, and feed them and not have to worry every month that I’m gonna be homeless. The more of a reptile you are, the more ruthless you are, it’s respected in business. They hide behind well that’s how business is done. No, it isn’t. That’s how you’re doing business”

NEW on “Paper Trail”: Under Trump 2.0, the White House has often ignored Congress to carry out its agenda. Entire agencies, like USAID, have been gutted. ICE has grown explosively.
Behind it all is one man: Russell Vought.

The current GOP Congress is the dumbest group of motherfuckers to EVER occupy a branch of government. If these idiots were managing a goddamned WENDY'S they would be fired within a week.

The level of disrespect senators are displaying when questioning a witness is galling. I shouldn’t be taken aback at this by now but I am. We should not get used to this.
.@SenJohnKennedy (R-LA) claims the Biden administration told AG Merrick Garland to prosecute President Trump and peppers Jack Smith with questions, "Do you believe in the tooth fairy...? How about the easter bunny...?" and concludes saying, "you make me want to throw up in my mouth."
"Last summer, ...Americans rose up to defeat Senator Mike Lee's plan to sell off 3.5 million acres of public land. Hunters and anglers, climbers, veterans, and tribal nations all joined the fight.
It felt like a victory. It turned out to be a diversion."

I write and teach about the right for a living, and @lionel_trolling's latest piece (on Erick Erickson's cri de cœur about the infiltration of fascists into conservatism) is the best thing I've read on the subject in quite a while. A must-read. See link below.

Lmao ok so who is gonna pay the shipping cost for this potash from Belarus that American farmers could be getting from Canada for much cheaper
Trump: "The United States is working on a massive Deal with respect to the purchase of Potash from Belarus. The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP"

Trump knows his 250-foot arch is a political disaster, so just like his monstrous ballroom he's now pitching it as a military installation chock full of drones and snipers. He's lost the American people on this issue and he knows it, so now he's panicking. Keep the pressure on, email the National Capital Planning Commission at [email protected] and tell them to REJECT the "ARC DE TRUMP."
