Vale PA (Pat) Clohessy AM (1933 to 2026) ❤️
Pat Clohessy was a guru of his craft – as a master coach of distance runners – his charges an honour roll of many of Australia’s best, headed by Rob de Castella.
As an athlete, Pat represented Australia in the Commonwealth Games in Perth in 1962 in the one and three-mile events before spending time in the US college system. Later, when a history teacher in Melbourne, he drew attention as a mentor of schoolboy athletes before becoming one of the nation’s first full-time coaches at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
He was a team coach at Olympic Games and World Championships – always known for his enthusiastic appraisal of every athlete’s performance at training or in competition, however that might have gone. He was accordingly loved by his own athletes and admired and respected across the broader athletics community.
Pat was made a member of the Order of Australia in 1988 and became a Life Governor of Australian Athletics in 2014.
Full Vale to follow.
