My mom was born in Thailand. She moved here at about six. Today she speaks about two words of Thai and is, in soul, a modern, fashionable, conservative Mormon grandma. She's literally the same as everyone else in Rexburg, she's just brown and we eat rice a little more often.
My brother just got married in the spring to the sweetest little Southern bell of a girl from Virginia. We were a little worried when he got serious with the first girl he dated off of his mission but it's been so great to get to know her and how she's the nicest girl who can stand her own against his teasing. She was adopted at 10 from Ethiopia.
My parents built their new house in the countryside right across the street from where their best friend built his. He's a real estate agent who helped my wife and I find our house. Loves snowmobiling and Trump. Most generous soul you'd ever meet. He came from Venezuala as a teenager and bemoans the state of his former country, but not too often. This is his home.
What the identitarians have correct is that being American is more than just an "idea" or a "paragraph". Being American IS to belong to a tangible group of people. It's not racial. You can have a foreign accent. You can have different ancestors. But you have to decide to belong and build up this country and everyone else in it. You gotta love eagles flying over American flags while crying about fallen soldiers. You gotta believe we're all gonna strike it rich one day in some new technology. You gotta love being outside. And deep down, you gotta know that this is the best country on earth.

The spirit of modernity is not even atheism, it is demanding that God justify Himself to us for making us exist; a true hatred and resentment towards reality itself. Modern people can imagine Hell, but are offended by Heaven.

Got a new electric keyboard. Woke up this morning to the 4 year old tapping along with the first accompaniment song ("My Heart Will Go On").
"What'cha playing, bud?"
Him: *plink, plink on the keyboard*
*soberly* "Jesus Christ died."
...
"He is a spooky ghost."

Not worthless, just astonishingly abundant. Thanks free market entrepreneurial capitalism.
Walmart is selling real diamond earrings for $12.
Not a typo. Half-carat lab-grown diamonds, same carbon, graded by the same labs that grade the stone in your engagement ring. A jeweler can't tell them apart without a machine.
And that $12 price tag is why the company that invented the engagement ring is about to get sold for scrap.
De Beers ran the diamond trade for over a century. At its peak it controlled up to 90% of the world's rough supply, and when demand dipped it just locked diamonds in London vaults until prices came back. The slogan "A Diamond Is Forever" came from their ad agency in 1947. So did the rule that a ring should cost two months of your salary. Before that campaign, most American brides never got a diamond at all.
The whole thing held for 80 years because there were only so many mines. Then China started growing diamonds in reactors, and there's no vault on earth big enough to hide a factory's output.
Lab-grown wholesale prices have crashed roughly 96% from their peak, down to around $100 a carat. The Knot says 61% of engagement rings sold in 2025 had lab-grown center stones, up 239% since 2020. Even De Beers' own average selling price fell 32% in a year, to $105 a carat.
So Anglo American, which owns De Beers, has written it down by $6.8 billion in two years and is now in talks to sell the whole thing for about $1 billion. This is a company that was valued over $18 billion in 2001 and $13 billion as recently as 2011.
The stones coming out of the ground are the same as ever. The only scarce thing De Beers ever owned was the marketing, and marketing doesn't survive a $12 price tag at Walmart.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Walmart $12 0.5ct "Created White Diamond" studs (Paris Jewelry) often fail diamond testers per reviews and are not genuine lab-grown diamonds. Certified lab-grown 0.5ct pairs list around $79-89.

Realizing the most cracked ship might just float
"Sirius?!"
"Hey Pet... Been a mo', huh?"
"I-I had heard you were in prison!"
"Was... Crime I didn't commit."
"... I didn't believe you killed Lily... I-I couldn't... God... That feels like a lifetime ago."
"Heh... Tell me about it. So... Married? Kid?"
"Yes."
"Good man?"
"Yes... We... You know about Harry."
"I do."
"... We didn't treat him well... We were... It was terrible of us... If you're here for revenge-"
"Pet... For a time, I was thinking of coming here and turning you all into pigs. It would serve you right, all you've done to Harry."
"... You're right... It would..."
"But, that's... Not going to fix anything, is it?"
"No... There was a time... A time I loved you, you know."
"Aw, Pet, don't do this to yourself-"
"No, no... I did. I really did. I love Vernon and Dudley but... If I'd chosen you-"
"We were two stupid teenagers, Pet. It would have crashed and burned. You made the right call for me... Now make the right call for Harry."

I'm getting a little worried for my right-wing brethren. They're really susceptible to the grift.
I'm as conservative as the next guy, but I'm no tribalist. It's okay to call out the lame behavior of right wing pundits too.
(It's actually about remembering the pre-mortal existence and longing to return home to God, btw)

Less than a month after the terrorist attacks on 9/11, President Gordon B. Hinckley addressed the Church and the world at the General Conference pulpit.
This was his message:
“Are these perilous times? They are. But there is no need to fear. We can have peace in our hearts and peace in our homes. We can be an influence for good in this world, every one of us.
“May the God of heaven, the Almighty, bless us, help us, as we walk our various ways in the uncertain days that lie ahead. May we look to Him with unfailing faith.”
