What’s new in Ethiopia? Practical innovation with lessons for the continent.
At #MedEdAfrica2026, this session spotlighted how Ethiopia is strengthening health professions education through leadership, digital systems, and regional collaboration.
The discussion focused on three key areas: Ethiopia’s national residency matching programme, Arba Minch University’s curriculum monitoring dashboard, and the Rwanda-Ethiopia South-South partnership in specialist health workforce development.
The Ethiopian Residency Matching Program has helped more than 10,000 general practitioners enter residency training, while making placement fairer, more transparent, and more standardised.
As Dr. Abdulselam Kalil noted:
“Strong leadership, standardized selection, and digital systems can rapidly expand specialist training without compromising quality.”
Arba Minch University’s digital curriculum monitoring dashboard is also showing how real-time data can improve quality, track learning, and support better decisions in medical education.
The Rwanda-Ethiopia partnership further demonstrated the power of African institutions working together, with more than 100 Rwandan residents currently training in Ethiopian universities.
Speaking on the partnership, Dr. Menelas Nkeshimana emphasized the value of home-grown solutions and long-term collaboration:
“African institutions possess the expertise needed to strengthen one another through long-term partnerships.”

Today, the Second #MedEdAfrica2026 Continental Conference was officially inaugurated in the presence of H.E. Ato Temesgen Tiruneh, Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
The conference has brought together more than 800 participants from across Africa and beyond, including government officials, university leaders, medical schools, health professionals, researchers, and development partners.
It provides an important continental platform for strengthening health professions education, fostering collaboration among institutions, promoting the exchange of knowledge and experience, and advancing innovation and research to prepare Africa’s future health workforce.
I am confident that the partnerships and ideas emerging from this conference will contribute to transforming health professions education and strengthening health systems across our continent.

Today, we inaugurated the Arba Minch Conference Resort, another magnificent outcome of our 'Dine for Generation' initiative. This modern resort features state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a conference hall capable of hosting over 1,300 people and a unique floating restaurant on the lake. It will strengthen our vision of making Ethiopia a hub for international forums by expanding conference tourism beyond our capital city, while creating vast employment opportunities for local residents.
I call upon all our citizens, the diaspora, and the international community to visit and experience this new jewel of our nation, and to take part in this new chapter of Ethiopia's tourism and conference sector!

Congratulations, #Ethiopia, for achieving Regulatory Maturity Level 3 in the @WHO’s global classification of national regulatory authorities.
Ethiopia now joins Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Senegal and Rwanda in reaching Maturity Level 3 on the continent.
This progress is making Africa closer to improving local production and access to safer, quality medicines and medical products. #HealthForAll
