In general, the self-driving has become almost magical, far beyond what a camera-only system should be able to accomplish. Things like its driving into a metal post or, reportedly, a white truck at speed make those limitations all too clear.
Tesla has reviewed the accident and stands firmly behind their disclaimer for any liability arising from being foolish enough to expect the car to brake before running into stuff. They, further, were completely uninterested in hearing why the accident occurred.
The problem is the lack of radar or lidar. What made this time different was that the car perfectly aligned itself very early on, so it was going straight backwards. The single camera, therefore, had no parallax shift to give it a means to generate a 3D model of the post.
Tesla claims I should have reacted within that second to stop the car. The car had parked in that same spot more than 5 times before, so I assumed it would brake at the end of the spot as it had before.
My Tesla Model S Plaid using Autopark drove itself into a post. If your Tesla is backing into a parking space, take control several feet before it is fully in place. The car appeared to be operating normally until less than a second before it continued backward into the post.
On October 3, 1967 I tried pure LSD. I found myself in a world overlayed with stunning, brilliant visual effects. Life changing.

When is Apple going to offer an Undo for iPhone and iPad that doesn't require you to hold the device up in the air and shake it violently like an enraged crazy person?
The Apple mania for visual design at the expense of usability has reached a new apex: The new Apple credit card must not be kept in anything made of leather or denim, nor left adjacent to other cards. In other words, leave it at home. news.google.com/articles/CAI…
Brilliant, acerbic article by Joe Clark cataloging IOS & Mac features either ill-designed or foolishly & unnecessarily obscured. Lots to learn for designers and users alike. blog.fawny.org/2018/10/22/ha…

Hawaii debacle due to grossly ignorant & incompetent design, not operator "human error." At least three, prob four or more blunders the most raw new HCI designer would never make. Operators were “set up” to fail and deserve an apology, along with the people of Hawaii.
My new iMac Pro, with 64 GB RAM and 4TB SSD has 11 times as many bytes of electronic memory as the Apple II, and by "Apple II," I mean the total of all electronic memory ever installed in all six million Apple II computers ever made
iPhone X separates the haves, who have money, from the have nots, who had money until they blew it all on an iPhone X
My iPhone X had trouble recognizing me for first hour. Now, it unlocks instantly. Appeared to learn. Not even glasses fool it
