80% of "strategy problems" are just communication problems. I see this CONSTANTLY. Leadership team spends weeks on a brilliant strategy. Rolls it out. Six months later: "The strategy isn't working." But when you dig deeper... People are executing different versions of what they THOUGHT they heard. The CEO meant X. The General managers heard Y. Middle managers interpreted it as Z. And frontline employees are doing... something else entirely. No one's actually testing the real strategy! I was consulting with a media company a few years back. Their "failed product strategy" wasn't failing because the strategy was wrong. It was failing because 3 different teams had 3 different ideas of what success looked like. They were literally working against each other. Do this quick test …. Ask 5 people on your team to explain your current strategy. If you get 5 hugely different answers, you don't have a strategy problem. You have a communication problem. The hardest part of executing strategy is not the strategy itself but getting everyone to understand it the same way. Anyone else see this pattern? Or am I just working with uniquely dysfunctional teams? 😂

In 1966, Botswana was the world's second poorest country, after independence with no university. They sent students to the University of Lesotho, which was nationalised and they were expelled. Botswana's citizens donated cash, cattle, grain to raise money to build their own university. Today, it's an upper middle-income economy.

So true. Lean team wins most times
when startups do insanely cool things: the team is small

Pivoting is not admitting defeat. Instead, it is about adaptability. It is about recognizing that your initial idea might not be the golden ticket, but there are elements within it or lessons learned that can be redirected to something more promising.

Startup life demands grit, resilience, and mental toughness. But rising to meet those extreme challenges is profoundly fulfilling. Entrepreneurs enjoy the self-discovery that comes from pushing limits and embracing the unfamiliar.

The Reality of Timelines Popular media loves highlighting overnight startup success stories. But building a profitable, sustainable business is a long game with many peaks and valleys. Quick wins are rare. Patience and grit pay off over decades, not months.

We underestimate the power of pausing as a way to grow. It's simple. pause when: 1) The plan's not working 2) People are burned out 3) You're chasing competition 4) You've lost focus on vision Pausing is essential for startup growth. It allows you to step back and gain perspective. It allows you to ask tough questions and find new solutions. It allows you to recharge and refocus. Pausing is not quitting. It's re-strategizing. So, if things aren't working, it's okay to hit pause. It's okay to take a step back. It's okay to pivot. Remember, a well-timed pause can lead to even greater growth.

Culture trumps almost everything else. It is the DNA of all successful endeavors. You can never truly understand people without understanding their culture. Forget the "what", focus on the "why". Learn culture, not content. Understand why, more than what.
