Product strategy book 👉
Joined July 2008
Building has never been easier. But deciding what to build—and how your product will win—has never mattered more. I wanted one book I could hand a founder or product leader: “Here’s how to actually DO strategy.” It didn’t exist. So... I wrote it. The Strategy Cycle is out now. Get it here 👉 geni.us/strategycycle Paperback, Kindle, and audiobook are all live now. Kindle is $2.99 this week only. It only took 3 years, 4 full rewrites, 1,000+ hours of research, and the hard-won experience of dozens of product leaders to get here. This is for builders with more opportunities than time, and no quiet month to figure it all out. The people who get asked: “So… what’s the strategy?” …while everyone is already cranking and the calendar is already maxed out. You have to decide: → How will our product win? → Where do we focus? → What do we stop doing? → Which bets are actually worth making? And then get people to understand those choices. Get them to buy in. And get them to, you know, actually use the damn thing. You’ll get your first strategy on paper in about an hour. Then turn it into clear bets your team can understand, act on, and adapt as reality changes. It’s all steak, no sizzle: a field guide you can put straight to work. One of the product leaders who helped pressure-test the book, Rajiv Chopra, nailed it: “‘Be more strategic’ is the product equivalent of being told to ‘just relax’: clear on the outcome, completely useless on how to get there. This is the first book that actually gives you the how.” Read it—or listen to it—on one flight. Put it to work Monday. My name is on the cover, but this book only exists because dozens of beta readers and product leaders came on this journey with me. Together, we brought 500+ years of product leadership experience to it. They marked up draft after draft, tested the method in the mess of real work, called out what was confusing, and pushed me to make it better. If you’re one of those people: thank you so, so much. And if a founder or product leader came to mind while reading this, send it their way. Keep making things that matter. LFG!

Are you depressed? Or are you just sitting indoors all day, not exercising, sleeping horribly, eating hyper processed foods, getting 4000 steps a day, and not working on anything important to you?
Don’t go to therapy. Fix your diet and get some exercise. Spend more time outdoors. You’ll feel infinitely better after a week than you would after 10 years of therapy.

I've become a huge fan of annual reviews over the last 8 years. I've gradually built up a super-thorough template. If you don't have an approach and want to give a review a try, here's a jumping off point to get you going. skotzko.notion.site/TEMPLATE…

Strategy is not prioritization. Strategy sets the frame in which prioritization happens.

Money is values neutral. How it's made or used isn't.

@RyanHoliday read your terrific post on 2y of detailed steps that go into writing a book. I'm starting to work on one and am curious. How much research are you doing in phase 1 (ideate) vs 2 (research)? Seems like a lot of research would go into ideating & finding structure.

... but you also say that you think you need to know the structure while researching. Chicken/egg thing here?

I'm sick. My wife's sick. Being sick sucks, but it's a lot better when you have loved ones to help make you feel at home. My best friends just brought over some food and offered to go grocery shopping for us. They live 5 min away. In fact we have an extended network of about 6-10 couples/families that all live within a 10 min drive of each other. Each of us made sacrifices to live here - Oakland is great but there are thousands of other places we could live. But once we got married and started settling down, we all moved back to within 1 hour of where we grew up. If you can finagle a situation where you live close to your best friends, I highly recommend the sacrifice. It's 100% worth it. P.S. We're particularly fortunate as many of us go back to elementary or high school. That may not be you but I know plenty of people who intentionally built second families in their 20s or 30s. It takes more effort and sacrifice but as I said, 10/10 would recommend.

"Hopium" 😂💯
The actual job of a product roadmap is to manufacture hope. Roadmaps are corporate hopium – we are addicted and we need a periodic hit of this hopium to deal with the sad reality that we will achieve very little this quarter because our infra sucks & we have a dozen dependencies.
