for the new york times magazine i wrote an essay about why everything is "gambling" now (the answer: actually everything is the statistical style now, and gambling is just how most of us understand that) nytimes.com/2026/10/04/magaz…

One of the best stories I have ever ever read. Sharing it today because there must be someone out there who hasn't read it yet. Trust me on this one: theatlantic.com/magazine/202…

“A New Yorker who spent months in Syria working for ISIS & returned disillusioned with his experience and convicted of material support charges asked if terrorism scholars would consider writing a letter of support to a judge so he could legally change his name. Every time a potential suitor googled his name before a date, the first result would be his terrorism conviction. The dates were always quickly cancelled.”
My colleagues and my latest @lawfare piece about terrorism recidivism.

well written, well argued presentation of real world harms of AI without going into histrionics
it won’t get the same amount of pickup bc it’s not scifi coded, but it’s just as concerned

Extremely good piece
This essay talks about the left's vision for technology, the "alliance" between left and right-wing anti-data center movements, politics of refusal, democratic control over the AI infrastructure buildout, China, industrial policy, and more.

John Wilson, thank you for making a movie for me, specifically, as one of the few dozen people excited about concrete.

RIP beautiful Katherine ❤️
Comedian and former late-night bandleader Reggie Watts is a proud ketamine enthusiast.
Loved ones of his ex-girlfriend Katherine McCollough claim she became addicted to the drug through Watts’ encouragement to take a heavy array of psychedelics in the name of enlightenment. McCollough died by suicide in March.

It is funny that I caught it
A polling firm fabricated entire surveys...and nobody in the media caught it.
But the real scandal isn't the fraud. It's that the fraud worked so easily.
Most journalists covering polls either don't know how to vet polls or choose not to. Either way, the public gets frustrated and the polling industry gets the shaft.
I put together a six-question checklist that any reporter, campaign manager, or public affairs team can use before trusting a single number. None of the questions require a statistics degree (thank goodness, cause I don't have one). They require about five minutes and a willingness to ask.
The media's polling literacy problem isn't going away on its own. But it could get better fast if newsrooms started asking even half the right questions.

This was from five years ago about SOHA, Nithya Raman, who was then in city council, and the legacy of the late Richard Close, the head of SOHA who team up with Howard Jarvis to change the entire trajectory of the state.
