How did London start? Why are elephants so big? Are rats and squirrels cousins? How to be a fair judge?
Four real questions from children.
Take the rats and squirrels. A chatbot handles it in five seconds. Yes, both are rodents. Correct, complete, conversation over.
But look at what that child did. They noticed two animals that look alike and reached for a concept they have no word for: common ancestry. "Cousins" was the closest word they had, and it happens to be right.
And it opens outward.
Who else is in the family?
What makes a rodent a rodent? Teeth.
Are we cousins too?
A question about squirrels walks into taxonomy, then deep thinking.
Getting a child from their question to the next one isn't new. It might be one of the oldest ideas in teaching.
A good school already does this work. Teachers spend years building a child's tolerance and then stamina for not knowing yet. Sit with the problem, try something, be wrong, try again.
Technology has been moving the other way. Almost everything a child can reach on a screen is built to answer fast and answer first. Whether that changes how children think is still an open question. The direction the tools are pulling is obvious.
We build with AI for kids, so this is our problem too. The easiest thing to build in this category is an answer machine. Fast, accurate, satisfying, and quietly corrosive to the thing we claim to care about.
Which is why we believe safety here is defined too narrowly. Controlling what a child can see matters enormously, and it isn't sufficient.
A product can be safe by that measure and still teach a child that thinking is something you outsource.
So here’s the standard we hold ourselves to:
A product for kids should leave them more curious than it found them.
