Machine learning is no excuse to break the law. Today's settlement on Amazon Alexa should set off alarms for parents across the country - and is a warning for every AI company sprinting to acquire more and more data.

This disruption will be temporary, but there's a war on, and there's never a better time to disrupt the enemy's intelligence apparatus then when they are trying to make better decisions to get off the back foot.

👉The ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline—2 years ago today—was a watershed moment in cybersecurity. Since then, we’ve learned a lot & made great strides w/our partners, but lots more to do to strengthen our collective cyber defense. A brief reflection: go.dhs.gov/4WY

Space and #cybersecurity and the next generation workforce needed to secure space on the ground and on orbit was front and center today. In my travels.
The advent of space mobile phone satellite networks with 4G and 5G speeds & the United States Department of Defense's high interest in them is informative.
The launch of the Infrastructure Asset Pre-Approval Program (IA-Pre), establishing new #cybersecurity requirements for commercial #satellite communications providers working with the U.S. military is a forcing function.
The program has been in development since 2018 and industry participants have been providing input throughout the process. Some companies have been preparing for years to measure against the relevant NIST 800-53 controls—the National Security System Overlay and Space Overlay. More recently, Russia’s war in Ukraine reaffirmed the need to heighten cybersecurity standards while confirming what many satcom operators understood about the risks to commercial space assets. (By: Leandra Bernstein — August 9, 2022, Kratos)
Jared Reece, manager of the U.S. Space Force’s Infrastructure Asset Pre-Assessment Program, said that the branch’s new policy will be based on a risk management framework set forth by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
He was referring to NIST SP 800-53, which contains more than 900 security controls that cover every aspect of information technology operations including incident response.
USSF plans to create an “approved products list” of pre-assessed satellite assets and subject potential contractors to 3rd-party audits through the IA-Pre process, according to the report.
Full implementation estimated by 2025. (by Nichols Martin November 8, 2021, 2:00 am ExecutiveBiz)
Space companies — both big and small — must dedicate more resources to secure their entire space systems (satellites, communications links, and ground assets) against nation-state kinetic and cyber-attacks. However, while larger satellite companies have been preparing for cyber threats for years, small and medium sized companies are at higher risk due to limited resources to mitigate cyber vulnerabilities.
The #CMMC will require DoD contractors to adopt hundreds of cybersecurity controls listed under #NIST 800-171 meant to protect controlled unclassified information (CUI) as a condition for working with the DoD. The U.S. Space Force’s IA-Pre Program will require satcom providers to comply with over 400 cybersecurity controls, aligned with the #NIST 800-53 High-Impact level.
