最後に、県芸に講義に来た時に戸谷さんが、電車に乗って空いていた席に座ると座面がほのかに暖かいことがある。それが彫刻だと話していた。彫刻は冷たい素材を扱うけれど、人と人の暖かさをテーマにする。そのような意味に受け取った。

そんなエピソードが、ぼくの日々の制作の中に刻み込まれていて、ふとした瞬間に戸谷さんの優しく厳しい表情がわいてくるのである。

周吾さんが名古屋まで会いに来てくれて、そんなこともあって戸谷さんとの関係は緩やかにつづいていた。世田谷の鶴巻で個展をやった時には、戸谷さんにトークイベントに参加してもらった。戸谷さんが愛知県に来たときにはチェーンソーをノコギリのように使っていた。

お別れの会が6月末にあると書いてあったので電話をしようか悩んでいたが、それとなく戸谷成雄で検索してみると奈良さんのツイートがあった。戸谷さんとの出会いは愛知県芸に講義に来てくれたときだ。そのあと作品を見た戸谷さんが周吾さんを紹介してくださり、

ヨーロッパから帰ってきて何かの拍子に古いAOL(アメリカオンライン)のメールをチェックしていたらシュウゴアーツから戸谷成雄を逝去のお知らせが来ていた。学生の頃ケンジタキギャラリー名古屋で戸谷さんの展覧会の搬出のアシスタントをしたとき唯一無二の彫刻家、戸谷成雄をはじめて知った。
