Within just ten years, the ABS helped establish several small bison herds across the United States, with some herds founded using animals from the Bronx Zoo. These early efforts laid the groundwork for the species’ remarkable recovery.

The zoo has been visited by many luminaries since it opened in 1895, including disability rights advocate, Helen Keller! In 1922, she visited the zoo with her young nieces and they delighted in all aspects, meeting giraffes, snakes, and more! #BZ125

It’s Restaurant Week in NYC! Oysters on the half-shell, anyone? In the early 1900’s, the zoo’s Rocking Stone Restaurant had an extensive menu that featured many culinary delights and classics, including Blue Point oysters for just 25 cents!

In 1972, WCS’s George Schaller published The Serengeti Lion from his famed research on the species. For 50 years, it stood as the most comprehensive work on lions, as @DrLukeHunter wrote in 2020. These are some of Schaller’s photos from then. bit.ly/3sbo2Pd #WorldLionDay
