Our new field experiment (w/ @AnujitCh, @hmmlowe, @GarethNellis) shows how brief interactions with multiple outgroup members (broad contact) and longer interactions with a single one (deep contact) shape intergroup relations.
Paper: researchgate.net/publication…
With exposure time fixed, working with one outgroup partner builds stronger ties; working with several reduces the majority’s misperceptions about the outgroup, from Anujit Chakraborty, @arkdevghosh, @hmmlowe, and Gareth Nellis nber.org/papers/w35884

I answered a few questions related to the job market series in 2024 (Please take note of points 1 and 3). Here’s the link xitter.cf/srajagopalan/status/18…
I have received some questions about the job market series. Answers below, please RT.
1. We have a handful of spots and try to accommodate as many scholars as we can. There are no real criteria for selection: it should be something I find interesting and can engage with. And if there are too many papers like that, then I will resort to the order in which we received the interest.
2. I read the papers as they are sent and will start reaching out to scholars in the last week of August and record in September. The release will follow our usual schedule through the fall.
3. The Google form is scaring some of you. I used to ask scholars to reach out over email but the volume can be quite high. And I want to make sure you don't slip through the cracks in my inbox. We won't be sharing any of that information in that form publically, so we understand if you only have a tentative title for the job market paper etc. If you are still worried, please email me with the same information requested in the form and mention the IOI job market series in the subject line.

When states in the US banned cousin marriage, it led to more people immigrating to the cities and changing into higher paying professions. More evidence for how kinship networks hold back development. 1/
We have a new NBER working paper on how uncertainty about social-group membership shapes intergroup relations.
Concealment of social-group membership between pairs of workers weakened intergroup relations by making them unsure of each other's identity and less able to interact authentically, from Anujit Chakraborty, @arkdevghosh, @hmmlowe, and Gareth Nellis nber.org/papers/w35364

In my JMP, I ask: Why do different kids specialize in different skills?
In the same classroom you have:
– the math whiz
– the leader
– the quiet empath
Is that because they chose different skills to invest in… or because some skills are just harder for them to build?
