Thank you for saying this. The EOL policy makes little environmental sense, penalises car owners and rewards car companies. There should be a right to repair, maintain and upgrade. And surely governments can spend a little more money to have credible fitness tests.
Delhi's End-of-Life (EOL) vehicle policy has gone off track. Owners are being forced to junk perfectly running cars due to fear, not facts. Moms have been connecting many stories to the media and authorities. A well maintained 10 year old car emits less than a neglected new one, yet no scope for fitness checks? Delhi has 62 lakh EOL vehicles, yet even low mileage, BS IV cars with valid emissions are being scrapped. In 2024, 39000+ impounded, with no fitness tests allowed. Why not adopt conditional extensions, as other states do? We need cleaner air and smarter policy. And policy that curbs pollution, not punish prudence! timesofindia.indiatimes.com/… via @ishita_jairath @timesofindia @CPCB_OFFICIAL @CAQM_Official @PrinSciAdvGoI @LtGovDelhi @CMODelhi

Why do people think it’s netas and babus? They may be part of the roadwidening problem, but engineers and the entire technical community of urban development are much more to blame. There’s an east-west problem also in the imagination of trees.
In a Hot and Humid country like INDIA, this is exactly how our cities should look, full of trees and shade. But our Netas and Babus would probably get a heart attack seeing this much Greenery. 🙏🤷🏻‍♂️

These men are the rat-hole miners, skilled workers who drilled through the debris pile manually and create a narrow passageway to the 41 workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand. The team of 24 rat miners and NDRF are the real heroes of this 17-Day rescue mission.

This tragedy, at the heart of it, is no different from sewer deaths, engineering norms thrown to the winds at the cost of migrant workers, adivasis and Dalits. No one is ever held accountable for the cost of jugaad engineering.
Who will be held accountable for this?

There are lots of problems with personal laws, but these are false binaries. My personal law should be fair to me, in the context I inhabit, how does it matter if it’s different for my neighbour, as long as hers is fair to her too?

And meanwhile there seems to be a Korean green energy company and some illegal waste dumping in the picture. The investigation and cleanup need powers and expertise that none of these agencies have on their own.

It’s such a cliche to say we need better urban planning. No one wants to talk about the quality of engineering. For several weeks before the rain Delhi’s PWD engages bands of drunk men to climb into the underground drains to open them up. And it’s never enough. #manualscavenging

Which is to say that the underground drainage system is chaotic and highly compromised. For most of the year it’s possible to make small fixes, by sending manual scavengers in, and perhaps sometimes with machines too, but even an ordinary monsoon is too much for it.

And yet every year, all the newspapers have the same editorials about ‘urban planning’. It’s as empty as saying ‘we need better political will’.
