not to sound gay but im actually starting to think structuring our entire society around maximizing profit instead of the public good is a bad idea

‘Australia without migrant workers’
Who made this? 👏
Mandatory viewing for any fool who still doesn’t understand the implications of slamming the gates shut.
Open-source, the famously very capitalistic undertaking that isn't about giving things away for free (as in freedom, free beer, free puppy) and empowering other individuals.

Zelenskyy: "When our strikes reached Yandex data centers, it suddenly became little easier to breathe on many social media platforms. Many people noticed it.
There was less hate, less division, fewer provocations because there were fewer bots. It's pretty clear where those bots were coming from.
If they disappeared when Yandex went offline, this proves once again that Europe is not the source of the problems."
The big problem is that Russia figured out how modern society consumes information a decade ago, but the West hasn't.
There are millions of bots commenting and posting Russian propaganda. There are paid influencers spreading it, with Russian bots supporting their content.
There is a gigantic machine operating to radicalize and influence Western societies, and there is not enough defense in place.
It doesn't just influence elections, it sows discord, engulfs societies in culture wars, radicalizes teenagers, and shapes political decisions when elected officials fail to read the room.
That needs to change. And fast.

The more I watch the pro-AI e/acc crowd, the more obvious it gets: a lot of them are not futurists. They are lonely, bitter tech freaks with shitty personalities who figured out how to rebrand their contempt for humanity as “acceleration.”
They do not care about advancement in any broad, human sense. They care about the kind of advancement that lets them imagine other people being replaced, humbled, or made obsolete. That is the part that excites them. Not discovery. Not medicine. Not art. Not education. Just the fantasy of a machine finally doing the social revenge they were too pathetic to pull off themselves.
Maybe too many women rejected their creepy sexual advances, and now they want to take it out on the rest of humanity by cheering for anything that makes actual human beings easier to ignore, replace, or punish.

Mathematicians are not just hoarding credit for puzzle answers. They build understanding. When a major proof appears, the author normally explains it, defends it, gives talks, answers questions, finds the key ideas, helps others use it, and turns it into new research directions. If the "solver" is an AI pipeline operated by people who cannot explain the result, the community gets the worst version of progress: priority claims without responsibility.
The actual harm is not that AI helped solve something. If AI produced correct, understandable, checkable mathematics, mathematicians would eventually use it. The harm is flooding a field with alleged solutions while bypassing the human process that turns proofs into knowledge. It creates a backlog of expert review, discourages people from sharing open directions, lets shallow operators claim priority over work they do not understand, and converts researchers into janitors for machine slop.
This is not like a cancer researcher crying because a cure was found. It is more like a company dumping hundreds of unverified drug candidates, announcing that cancer has been "massacred," and then mocking oncologists for asking for trials, mechanisms, evidence, and accountability.
And honestly, the glee here is not even pro-science. It's just plain misanthropy. These people seem less excited that knowledge might advance and more excited that some class of humans might be humiliated, displaced, or made irrelevant. Did human beings hurt their feelings so badly that they now need a machine to avenge them against every profession that still values human expertise?

So, wait- all this time, far-right Conservatism was just 3 Russian data centers in a trenchcoat?
Everyone saying software is dead doesn’t know any normal people at all, sorry.
Normal people won’t be making software.
I am surrounded by normal people and tech is my hobby, this is how I can see it.
For many of you, you are surrounded by tech people and learning about normal people is your hobby.
Please listen to those of us who interact with normal people often.
They will not be building software.
Many of them don’t even open their email.
Like, ever.
I am not joking.
If someone claims to have fully automated vuln discovery on bug bounties, and they want to sell you their hackbot or a course or skills, be sure to ask for their current public profile stats, $ spend on tokens, and how much time they spend manually reviewing.
This!
Does it suck to not hear back for months on end? Of course. But if you’ve taken any time to read through some of the disclosed reports you’d understand why it takes so long and why they’re so burnt out.
Read a report the other day, and the “researcher” found a UAF. HOLY SLOP
It was a non exploitable bug that was patched in the upstream AND the report didn’t highlight anything of relevance. It pointed in the direction and that’s it.
Then when asked about it the “researcher” sent a wall of text… no details no nothing. Just pure Claude/script output of the UAF triggering. Reminder it WASNT exploitable (the conditions were practically impossible to meet and I believe you would have already had access to their pc soooo)
How in tf are triages supposed to weed out these reports kinds of reports AND still have mental energy for the good ones.
🫡 anyways, let’s just keep trying to give triage the best pocs and reports. Happy hunting!
I think part of the negative reaction against the OpenAI mathematics thing is that the work of thousands of exceptional individuals, who sacrificed very much in pursuit of their craft, is now being used to directly enrich a small handful of people. The benefits of all this research fall to precisely one group of shareholders who feel like they deserve Fields medals. Which is, frankly, disgusting.
Regular reminder that something having a CVE number, or "being" a CVE, does not mean that it's real or valid, let alone impactful.

The thing people don't understand about software development is the bottle neck wasn't ever the implementation, but rather the care and consideration behind every choice.

Decades later I still find Joel on Software as relevant as when I first read it.
If you haven't read it, check out The Law of Leaky Abstractions.
Keep it in mind when someone tells you coding agents are another level of abstraction. As Joel and Thariq say sooner or later you'll end up needing to understand the lower level.
