I don’t think free will is real. I think everything is law. Think about it. You didn’t choose your parents or choose your brain. You also didn’t choose your genes or where you were born. You also didn't choose what happened to you as a kid, what scared you, what made you feel safe, what you learned, what you forgot, what you were exposed to, what your body reacts to, what your brain likes, what it hates, what it avoids or what it chases. Then one mystical day you’re supposed to magically become a totally free person making choices outside of all of that? I don’t buy it. You make a choice. Fine. Why did you make that choice? Maybe something in you wanted that choice more than the other one. Where did that want come from? You didn’t create it. You can say, “Well I can fight my urges.”Sure. Why did you want to fight the urge? Keep going back and you never find this little guy sitting in your head saying, “I am outside cause and effect and I will now make a free choice.” It’s just layers and layers of cause. Your childhood affects how you think and so does your sleep. Even your hormones affect how you think as does stress. A memory can change a choice as well as a sentence someone said to you ten years ago. Even thoughts just show up. Try it. Think of a city. Whatever city popped into your head, ask yourself why that one showed up. Did you search every city in your brain first and pick one? Fuck No. It just appeared. Then you can say, “I’ll think of another one." Where did the thought to think of another one come from? Same problem. Now take the whole universe and rewind it exactly one minute. Same everything. Would you make a different choice? If everything is exactly the same, I don’t see how you could. If you do make a different choice, something changed. And if something changed, then that change is part of the cause. People bring up quantum stuff and randomness. That doesn’t fix it either. If some tiny random event changes what you do, you didn’t choose that random event. Random is not free will. So what are we fucking left with? Cause and effect. Some of it is easy to see. Some of it is so complex we can’t track it. Still not free will. A storm is hard to predict; but it still follows rules. The brain is the most complex thing we know of. Of course it feels free from the inside.I still make choices and I still think. I still change and learn and decide. I just don’t think there is some separate “me” standing outside the brain and outside nature making choices with no cause. I think I am the whole process. The process follows law.

How do we know the universe is 13.8 billion years old, rather than much older or even infinitely old?
