“There are things that feel so far away from you at times, and you don’t give permission to dream those dreams. I didn’t see myself as the romantic lead. I’ve rarely seen women that look like me portrayed in that way, and it felt so inaccessible. I remember telling my team, ‘I know who they’re going to cast, and it’s not going to be me.’ Why was I thinking that way? Why have I been trained and been raised to think that Black women don’t fit in these spaces? I was writing myself off before I even gave myself a chance.”
