My Dazed Monster Ninja Femi OG couldn't wait to beam up some Evo Frens for a coin run! Who's ridin' today?
9-9-99
The date that will always nostalgically swirl in my head...
On September 9, 1999, Sega launched the Dreamcast in the US for $199 spurring on the growing console wars with one of the most iconic console releases ever and the next-gen hardware to back it up. 128-Bit graphics, built-in modem, VMU, that swirl logo! And a launch lineup that actually felt next-gen instead of “wait six months for the good stuff.”
US launch games for 9/9/99:
Sonic Adventure • Soulcalibur • NFL 2K • House of the Dead 2 • Power Stone • Ready 2 Rumble Boxing • Mortal Kombat Gold • Hydro Thunder • Tokyo Xtreme Racer • NFL Blitz 2000 • Blue Stinger • Airforce Delta • AeroWings • CART Flag to Flag • Monaco Grand Prix • TrickStyle • PenPen TriIcelon • TNN Motorsports HardCore Heat
27 years later the hardware has faded, but that 9-9-99 energy still hits. One of the cleanest “this is what next-gen feels like” days in console history.
What’s the first game you fired up that night?
Soulcalibur was there on day one, and it wasn’t just “arcade accurate.” Namco rebuilt it for Dreamcast and made it better: richer 3D stages instead of flat backdrops, extra modes, extra costumes, extra character, and visuals that made the System 12 arcade cabinet look and feel dated.
For a lot of people it was the moment 3D fighting stopped feeling like a tech demo and started feeling like the future. Weapon combat, ring-outs, quick, responsive yet smooth control and movements... it set the bar for what home fighters would become.

Crazy Taxi wasn’t on the launch shelf (it dropped early 2000), but quickly became a Dreamcast staple. Same NAOMI arcade DNA, Offspring blasting, drifting through traffic like a maniac — and the home version didn’t just copy the cabinet, it added extra content while keeping that raw arcade snap.
Together with Soulcalibur, House of the Dead 2, Power Stone, Hydro Thunder and the rest, Dreamcast made the pitch crystal clear: the arcade wasn’t dying, it was moving into your living room, often looking and playing better than the original hardware.
